My friend was gonna purchase an HDX online, but surprisingly, It's no longer availiable on the HP website.

Possible that there could be an update real soon?

HP employees don't have a clue. Several posts say that a rep said it was discontinued while another said that it is being replaced. Others say that it is not being discontinued. It is too early to tell it seems.

I ordered the HDX on August 25th and had an estimated ship date for Sept. 4.

Today I received a generic e-mail from HP stating there has been a delay (I've included the e-mail below). The e-mail doesn't confirm or deny the possible discontinuation of the HDX, but is shows that there are issues in the production line.

I will not cancel my order and will wait. But I am very weirded out by the fact that they removed it completely from the site... Why not just list it as temporarily back ordered, out of stock or oversold? I am just a tad paranoid/bummed that they might discontinue them... It is the best desktop replacement out there in my opinion! I just hope I am able to get mine!

    Dear Valued Customer,

Due to production delays we will be unable to ship your order on the original
estimated ship date. The revised estimated ship date for your order is 10/3/2008. If you
prefer not to wait you may cancel your order and receive a prompt refund
by either replying to this email message with your order number or
calling our toll-free customer service number at 866-217-6014 between
7:00 A.M. - 2:00 A.M. (ET) Monday through Friday or on Saturday between
    10:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. (ET).

If we do not hear from you before we ship your order, we will assume you
have agreed to this shipment delay and still want your custom PC order.
We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may have caused and thank
you for your patience. Following this email you will receive a HP Home &
Home Office Store $50 coupon due to the delay of your order.

    __________UPDATE: Friday, 5Sept2008__________

GEORGE B. – I sincerely hope the information you received from Wendy at HP is accurate and the removable of the HDX from the website is due to inventory instead of being discontinued!!!

I called Hewlett-Packard Palo Alto, California headquarters Friday and spoke with Kirsten in Executive Customer Service (650) 857-1501 (she identified herself as member of the CEO's office).

While on the phone Kristen searched the HP website for the HDX -- and as of Friday morning the only place she could find showing the HDX for sale was in England. This telephone conversation was 8:45 a.m. PST (it was 10:45 a.m. CST on my end).

I told her a lot of prospective HDX customers, like myself, were likely feeling a little left off-guard by the company's alleged discontinuance of the HDX laptop without any advance notice and/or allowing a reasonable time frame to place last orders.

Kristen was very professional, empathetic and a good listener. She promised to investigate from the CEO level and someone would be calling me back with correct information.

To be clear, Kristen DID NOT confirm HDX's discontinuance. In our discussion she was strictly in a fact finding mode.

Then on Friday afternoon, I had a question about a 17-inch HP laptop (dv7t) that I am now considering. I called customer service and spoke with a pre-sale representative. In our conversation, I asked if it was true the HDX is discontinued and she said yes. She stated she had heard the news Friday morning.

AGAIN, I HOPE THE INFORMATION GEORGE B GOT FROM WENDY IS CORRECT – AND I WILL CONTINUE CHECKING HP WEBSITE OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

I called HP toll-free sales line twice -- (888) 999-4747 -- and spoke with customer service representatives.

Also studied e-Bay and other online retailers offerings of pre-built HDX laptops.

    It's discontinued.

as for an update to it, there will be none at 20.1". HDX will become a brand which includes mice, notebooks and desktops. As for a grand-daddy notebook, expect an 18.4" 16:9 notebook in the future to compete with Toshiba and Acer.

    Here's the HDX mouse:

    Here's the HDX desktop PC:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prodinfoCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3751315

No idea when these will be available though. I'm guessing new HDX notebooks, 15", 16", 17", 18.4" won't be available until after CES 2009 show in January. But that's just a guess.

BTW, I've never known HP to give advanced notice of discontinuation of any product. Earlier this year when they discontinued their all-in-one PC, there was no warning. a few months later they intro'd the touchsmart AIO Pc's at their Berlin show. That's also where they introduced the montevina models of their notebooks (DV4, DV5, DV7). A refreshed HDX was curiously missing from that show in June. Then the price of the HDX was slashed some 40%. They gave away 32 HDXs in MAY in a webwide contest. The writing was on the wall...
