    No IDE Device

    Sigh...

    HP sent me a 1420 to replace the 1304 that kept giving me BSODs and had been repaired twice in the past three months.

    The 1420 arrived Friday...seemed to run fine.

    This morning I went to turn it on and it said it couldn't find the operating system.

    I booted again and went into the BIOS to run a diagnostic on the drive. It said it couldn't run that because "No IDE Device"

    Really, um, what about the 250GB hard drive ya got there, Mr. Laptop?

    What's the next step here? How do I remind it that it has an IDE device?

    UPDATE: Just went back and exited the BIOS setup and lo and behold it found the drive, the operating system, and booted.

    Of course, this doesn't explain why it happened in the first place.

    One quick thought...does HP/Vista have any weird problems with external USB hard drives (not keys)? When I first tried booting, the external was connected and rec'd the ol' not a system disk message, even though external USB was way down in the boot order.

    Hmm, perhaps take out the HD to make sure that its correctly put in place?

    clearly the question has been changed to: does HP/Vista have any weird problems with external USB hard drives (not keys)?

    someone else on the forum had the same problem. i have a western digital exHDD it doesnt infer with my boot order. maybe you have a XP or Vista ISO in your external.
