My dad had to talk to hp tech support about my sister's laptop, and the rep was saying you are not supposed to run windows update on the machine, because you won't get any of the correct drivers. Did anyone else know this? Seems weird to me.

Well I have run Windows update and I have no problems to speak of. I would use windows update anyway. Then I check for new drivers off of HP's site. This has worked well and I have not had any driver issues. Hope this helps.
By the way, I noticed you live very close to me. Probably a half hour away.

Yeah, that's what I've done, too. I usually deselect the drivers before grabbing the updates.
Where in Minny do you live? I'm actually in Blaine. -
Well I live in a city that rymes with "Realwater".
If you can't guess PM me lol. Yeah I go to Blaine once and a while.

I have had Windows Update driver updates mess things up on notebooks, but you won't get those unless you select them. You should DEFINITELY get the critical updates and probably get the non-critical ones.
Reminder: April 11th is Patch Tuesday for the month. New critical updates to help protect people who have still neglected to switch to Firefox. (Well, there's usually more than just IE patches, so if you do run Firefox you still need to update...)
No Windows Update?
