I was looking to get a new DV7 Laptop and was working on a custom configuration then I noticed that they only have one screen size available for the model now. What happened to the 1680x1050 units that the model use to have. I know they use too use 1440x900 res screens on the unit but now the only available res is 1600x900. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this

Well, 1600x900 is a different aspect ratio (16:9) to 1440x900 and 1680x1050 (16:10), so you won't see them on the same laptops. HP ought to offer 1920x1080, but it seems that on most cheaper 17" laptops, like HP's dv7 or Dell's Inspirion 17, 1600x900 dominates nowadays.

    could be that.....

the DV7 is coming to end of life and HP is selling the configs that they have the parts to build

    or

parts needed to to build certain DV7 configs are in short supply and HP is selling the configs that they have the parts to build

To be honest, you'd be hard pressed to find anything above 1600x900 on supposedly nicer machines, as well. In Dell's lineup, you have to spend over $2000 (Precision M6500) to get 1920 x 1200, sadly.

    Dell's Studio 17 has a 1920x1080 offering, which isn't quite so expensive.
