I just called HP USA and they said the dv5t has been discontinued. : [
I asked them about a replacement in the 15.4 inch realm; they said that it was 'replaced' with the 16 inch dv6t.
I'm realy stuck on what to do now. I like the idea of a 15.4 inch screen. But then again I don't know if .6 inch will make a difference?
So right now they have the dv5z, dv5t special edition, and dv6t instock.
I was looking to get it for regaular college use.
    Which would you recommend?
More importantly, which is more similar to the dv5t?
Do you guys think there will be a "real" 15.4 inch replacement?

Wow that is almost unbelievable! The Dv5t is arguably HP's best selling 15"er.. but thats probably why Dv6 *16" was released, supposedly it cuts costs..

See if you are OK with the special edition of Dv5t seems like you REALLY want it...

It appears the dv5t Special Edition is still available:

    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...232&srccode=cii_5766179&cpncode=17-26766624-2

This doesn't surprise me, I know that most manufacturers are moving to 16-inch screens from 15 because the LCD manufacturers are forcing it down their throats (it's cheaper to cut a 16" screen than a 15.4" screen because they have less scraps and glass that needs to be recycled or disposed of).

I'm glad I ordered mine when I did, dv5t was a great deal for a midrange gaming laptop.

I heard that the only difference between the dv5t and the dv5t special edition is that it has a green tint? Can anyone confirm this? How does it look-good?

There wasn't much noticeable size difference between my old G1 15.4 and my new HDX16. But I imagine that this will push people towards 14" screens for mobility. I'm just so used to lugging my old G1 around that moving up to 16" wasn't a big deal. It's really not that much bigger and heavier.

the dv5t special edition only comes with Integrated graphics option and no tv tuner option. it also has a different design, otherwise, it's the same machine. the dv5t was the most feature rich of any of these current machines.

lol, i actually feel really bad for the DV5 owners now

that being said they will have something unique because there will be nothing else like it.

Did the DV6 ever get the 9600gt or it still using the 9200?

no, the dv6t does not offer the 9600m GT option. If you want the 9600m GT you have to look at the HDX or dv7t models. (I am betting the dv7t is also going bye-bye very soon as well).

I suspect that HP does not want to offer the better GPU options on any of their non-HDX models as this causes competition within their product lines.

I to feel very fortunate to of purchased my dv5t with the 9600m only a week ago.

I'm with you on that, just got mine a week ago as well. If I would have waited for a 40% off coupon I would have ended up not getting the notebook that I wanted - glad I jumped on it when I did.

still, hp seems to be shooting themselves in the foot with this move. the dv5t sold very well because it was the first time it offered a midrange gfx card. the previous dv6x00 series capped out at low end dedicated. why, then, would they want to take this step backwards? doesn't make much sense...

yea, the biggest reason i got dv5t was 9600m gt... but dv6t only offers 9200m gs or something? plus lower mobility.. glad i bought it just before it was discontinued.. at a good discount too :)

Wow, I knew 16" screen were going to become the norm with LCD manufacturers, but definitely not this quickly. I hope the DV6t gets a better graphics card though because to step up to a HDX16 was at least 200 bucks more than the DV5t when I bought mine.

Don't get me wrong the 9600m GT is a decent midrange card, but the DV5t was so cost effective for the performance you get. Maybe they are waiting to refresh the DV6t with the new mobile ATI cards like the 3870 in the Studio XPS 16?

Well, the plus is maybe my DV5t will become so rare one day I can sell it on ebay for double I bought it for! :D

I hope HP doesn't screw over DV5t users with poor driver support. :(

Yeah I ordered mine 2 weeks ago when the 9600M was still available.

I always wondered how they made money on this thing given how solid it is for the price.

    Montevino, 1680x1050, P8600, 4Gigs, 9600M, 250g 7200 RPM, Intel 5100 wireless, bluetooth, lightscribe, web cam, 2 year warranty for $1250.

And the DV6T is not a replacedment. No 9600M = might as well give it away to those who only need email and web access :p

And the HDX is too large for what you get, especially since you are forced to get that infinity display and no option to skip it. Unless you only use your laptop to watch movies and game, try taking out an infinity to a coffee shop on the patio during the day. You literally can't see the screen.

So yeah, I imagine they are going to lose A LOT of prospecive customers unless they have an equivalent coming out soon.

And you don't need to worry about driver support. I don't use any HP specific drivers after I just rebuilt it with clean OS since there are no HP components inside :p

The only thing would be BIOS support but there is little reason you should need to worry about that during the life of your laptop unless you keep your laptop for a really long time.

After reading about the dv5t being discontinued I wonder how long HP will keep selling the dv5z.

People are now forced to look at the HDX 16t if they want a 9600M GT or get a slightly bigger dv7. Bad move really by HP. They are simply trying to push the HDX sales....Also dv6 does not offer a higher resolution as compared to a dv5t..

Yes, a very noticeable difference. 8 cores on the 9200 v. 32 cores on the 9600. Figure the 9600 is at least 3x more powerful.

I think you made a typo. It's the 3670 in studio xps.
If the HDX Dragon is any indication, driver updates will slow to a crawl.

Yeah my bad  its the 3670. Good catch 2.0!

I better make a backup of my drivers now because they are stable, so I don't have to use unstable drivers when I wipe the drive.

    Curious question.

I have Accidental spills and drops protection on my dv5t. If that happens and my lappy is shot, what will they replace it with?

Well, it seems like if you had the nvidia 9600M GT and 1680 x 1050 resolution the next comparable machine would be the HDX 16t. However, who knows what HP would do if they would rather try to screw you over with a lower spec computer. But i doubt that, at least i hope so.

In Europe they are also stopped with producing and stocking the DV5t with 9600M GT

Hopefully I can get my hands on one today :p
