Do you mean the touchpad or an external mouse?

If you are talking about the touchpad, take a look at the button and light directly above it. If the light is amber then the touchpad is turned off, so hit the button until the light turns blue, now the touchpad will be turned on.

If this is a external mouse, then you need to give us more information. Such as:
-What happened when the mouse stopped working?
-Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse?
-Does the mouse use a USB or PS2 connection?
-What have you done so far to troubleshoot?

Hi Envision, I did as you said - the light is blue, but the touchpad does not work still. Any more suggestions

Hi Envision, I am new to this forum, so don't know whether a quick post was the right thing to do! I am talking about the touchpad mouse, and the light you mention is blue - but mouse still dead! I toggled between amber and blue to make sure I knew what I was doing. akay.b

It's been a long time since I've uninstalled and reinstalled the touchpad drivers and software, and since I sold my laptop to my brother I don't have access to it much anymore. First thing I would try if I were you is to uninstall the Synaptics Touchpad software and reinstall it. The software can be found here:
    http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-002&h_query=dv6317&submit.x=3&submit.y=10

Select the your laptop, then select the operating system you are running, then select the Synaptics Touchpad software. Download it and then install it.

Remember, you will need an external mouse in order to do all these steps since your touchpad is the problem. If the problem persists after these steps it is most likely a hardware problem and will need to be sent in to get fixed. I remember when I first received my notebook, the touchpad wasn't working and I had to send it in to get repaired. It sucked, because I was all excited about getting my new laptop and it didn't even work.
