Picked up a TX1000Z today .. but haven't opened the box.. Went to HP's site to look to make sure there were the "core" essential drivers such as Network/Chipset/etc for Windows XP cause I want to immediately load on a fresh copy of WindowsXP. And to my surprise, they barely had anything...

Can I do this? Will I lose all touch-screen, fingerprint reading, media controls, etc. etc. "specialty" functions with the TX1000Z if I switch to XP?

If so, I had better take this thing back cause I hate Vista with a passion..

Damn HP for forcing people to use Vista to gain full functionality from their laptops.

i don't know what you are complaining about. as with all new laptops in the years to come, you will have to use vista, as xp support will end at the end of 2008.

you might as well prepare for vista.

The HP TX1000z was HP's first Vista laptop. It never had XP capability and there is really no reason why they would have drivers for it. Your fortunate if they had anything at all. If you really hate Vista that much then you are just going to have to get something else.

Plus I believe you will need Windows XP Tablet PC edition for the tablet features to work. The regular Home, MCE or Pro do not include tablet support while Premium versions of Vista do.

Wow.. seriously? Vista robs so much resources, everything runs so much slower in Vista than XP.

This is bad, bad news.. but you're right, the future is unfortunately Vista... I can't keep using XP for the rest of my life. I guess I can force myself to use Vista with this laptop until I learn how to fine tune and make it run without eating every resource available.

Vista aint that bad. yeah, it uses more resources but I have found it to be as speedy as XP in most cases. Just get rid of the junk software that HP preinstalls on every system they ship before using the laptop.
If you want to use XP, them consider the Compaq V6000TX which is offered with XP but is not a tablet. If you want a tablet with XP preinstalled take a look at the HPC 2710p. It is not yet released but should be available with either Vista or XP but expect the price to be much higher compared to the tx1000z...

Would it be possible to borrow the drivers from other models that share similar technologies?

I'm sure you could shoehorn XP tablet drivers into some of the HP units.. I will look at this as a learning experience and use Vista.. thank god I have a clean copy I can install instead of using HP's bloatware version.

Vista doesn't run any faster than XP. What Vista does is improved memory management and other fluffs. You'll notice that Vista will basically use all of RAM (resources) when operating. An idle RAM is a wasted resource.
