Okay I did a clean install of XP Pro and installed all the drivers (I got an OS CD and Application & Driver Recovery DVD from HP), but the sound wouldn't work. No it's not something stupid like having mute on. I installed and reinstalled the sound drivers and I checked to see if everything was okay in device manager. So I try a second clean install. This time, everything is working fine until I install the ATI graphics card update from HP's website. After the update I could not get any sound once AGAINI tried uninstalling it, but that didn't work. I STILL HAVE NO SOUND. Has anyone successfully clean installed XP on an 8510p and if so, what steps did you take? The HP people apparently have no clue since they told me to just use the CDs they provided which I did the first time to no avail.

Well, before I reinstalled Vista I put XP on my machine (my own CD) and the sound worked fine. Of course I didn't like using old GPU drivers so I went back to Vista but I didn't have a problem while I was there :\
Hmm...do you have your own XP you could try? -
For some reason I found that I only lost sound after I installed sp36674 from HP's website. sp36674 is the ATI stuff. It seems that when I install that, some ATI HD Audio thing is also installed and that it creates a conflict with the regular sound program. Unfortunately, for whatever reason I can't just install the ATI display driver from ATI's website. I still haven't figured out how to fix this problem.

try going to Control Panel and open Sound and Audio Devices. Go to Audio tab and check if there is your your sound card selected in drop down menu if not select it apply and restart. Hope this works

I'm just about to install a clean copy of XP on my 8510p. (Vista was a huge disappointment)
Before I dare to install any drivers, I want to ask if the sound problem still persists? What do I have to do in order to avoid that issue?
/Is there any other stuff I should be aware off when installing XP on my laptop? -
It was fixed. The problem occurs when installing the video drivers from HP. To work around this, when installing go to the custom option. Then when you're there, only install NET 2.0 (if you haven't already) and the ATI video driver. You can install the CCC if you want. However, do NOT install the ATI HDMI sound stuff. This creates a conflict which results in no sound. The only way to fix that problem is to do ANOTHER clean install. Simply uninstalling the sound stuff won't work. Trust me, I tried. On another note, make sure you install the updated video drivers from HP's website. The one on the driver disk isn't good. It's slightly unstable.

one more thing:
should install the ATI from the CD or go straight to the modtool http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/
Can install the provided drivers from HP first and then the modtool at some later point? (I know it seems obvious, but I've done too many reinstalls these days because some stupid driver screws up my system)
Did anybody try the modtool yet? Does it work properly? Is there a performance increase when gaming? -
I'd go straight to the modtool. Less hassle, less clutter installed. Modtool works great, and yes you can install some now and the newer ones later.

Just a note. Two days ago I installed WinXP on 8510p with graphic drivers 7.10 form ati page with modtool and I strarted getting black screens. So I reinstalled yesterday this time with original drivers from HP page and everything works fine now.
But on totally unrelated matter I lost networking due to some software conflicts but not because drivers. -
Is it correct that there's no way to install the ATI display drivers from the HP driver CD without the HDMI sound driver?
I'm also having a little trouble which Catalyst driver to install, here the thread:
