Go to control panel, under sound - set SPDIF to default when you plug it in.

I have a question... what should show in under sounds in the control panel?
I have a dv3 and all that I am showing is "speakers" there is nothing else listed. This laptop has a HDMI port. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Right click the speaker on the task bar (near the clock).
    Left click on "Playback Devices".
The selected choice should say something like "...nVidia HDMI"
    or "...default HDMI".

Or if you are using the optical cable for sound, "...SPDIF".
