Is it just me or are these 7200rpm HDs the loudest, chattering, annoying things iin the world? Damn this thing sounds like its eating itself. I have done the Augolistics defrag several times but there is no cure??????? The last HP laptop I had was a zv5300 series back in 04 and it failed totally last year and then I bought this one. I think they are both Tosiba drives.

Toshiba and Samsung hard drives are (in my opinion) lower end hardware that is either failure prone, noisy, hot, or poor performing. Seagate, Hitachi, and Western Digital are the good ones.

You could upgrade your hard drive you know...

Dude... I'm with you on that one. I bought the Hitachi 7200RPM drive (200GB) and it's friggin' LOUD! Actually, the drive was defective (crapped out after 5 days - total crash), so it's currently in the RMA process. I re-installed my stock Seagate Momentus and the difference is VERY noticeable. My seagate is almost whisper quiet compared to that Hitachi 7200! Oh well... everyone makes sacrifices for better performance. I've tried to quiet that beast down, but it is just something I have to get used to. It's a constant "whirring" sound that is almost as loud as the fans. If it weren't for the noise, these 7200RPM drives would be perfect...

And to think... like 90% of the reviews for this drive all said "quiet and fast"... well the fast part is pretty true (though not much faster than 5400RPM), but where the heck are all these reviewers getting the "quiet" part from?!!

Well, samsung is low end and low performance, but I bought one for my xbox because it was the most silent and cold one I could find, beating by far every other premium brand. It has not failed after 4 years of use.

In the other hand I've had WD disks, very good perfomance, but noisy as hell. If you don't need good performance in your laptop just buy a 5400 HDD, they are quiet, consume less power and generate less heat.

The 120GB Hitachi 7K200 drive I put in my dv9000z is quiet. My experience matches Greg's. Maybe there's a bad batch going around. It happens.
