With all this talk about how noisy these newer models (zv6k/r4000) seem to be, I've decided to look into some of the older Compaq/Hp's that have the Mobile Athlon64 chips like the 3000+, 3400+, 3700+.

I'm pretty sure, even though I have yet to experience my soon-to-arrive zv6k, that I'll be disappointed with the noise generated from its always-on fan. This is due to the fact that I currently use an Athlon XP-M Presario 2199 & really love its lack of noise. I've begun to look at some Ebay'd R3140's that have the 3000+ Mobile64.

****My question is how this processor compares to the 3200+ 64chip? One's core speed is higher, yet the other has double the on-dye cache.**** And, also is the max memory capacity still 1024x2Sodimms?
(I've read some sites that state 1,280 max in these models)

Thanks in advance for your responses & any other comments regarding the R4000 series vs. its predecessor.

Thanks for the clarification on performance differences!!
Made my decision easier. [ ;)]

However, I believe that your config. doesn't have the mobile sticker & isn't mobile due to it being the DTR 3200, whereas those who have the 3000+ do have truly mobile chips, But this is just a guess.

The sticker on mine does not say mobile, just AMD Athlon 64, just as it would be on a desktop case.

Well, in any case they are made to be used in a laptop, even AMD lists them as Processors for Notebooks whereas the 62W versions are reffered to as mobile...

The 3200+ in the ZV6000 is based on a newer core, so there will be performance gains associated with that. The 3000+, 3200+, 3400+ is what I would rate them as even if they are of different sockets, cores and also the cache size. IMO the influence of cache is very limited on AMD processors.(because they are so effecient)

Even on the older models(ZV5000/R3000) the fan runs continuously, since Hp uses DTR(89.5W) processors and not the real mobile(62W) processors. With the ZV6k/R4K HP probably just plonked in the desktop chips since they already run a lot cooler.

But if you are adventurous you can replace the DTR with a mobile cpu(from newegg) and the fans then will not run continuously. Check out the thread for info on how it's done...

The max memory is stated as 1280MB since 1 slot is not user accssible. It can stiil be upgraded but you will have to remove the keyboard & thus it will void the warranty.

Interesting, I really thought that they were legitimitally Mobile considering that they say Mobile AMD 64 on them (the little sticker) & all the spec.'s keep stating mobile.

    I'm not referring to the 3200+ w/512kb L2cache, but rather the 3400+/3000+ w/1MB L2cache.

Yeah making a choice is tough now since there are so many parameters to consider other than the frequency. AMD numbering system was easier before when there was a single version...Now there are A64's based on Clawhammers, Newcastle, Winchesters, Venice & San Diego with more to come in the dual core version...[B)]

Regarding the mobile sticker, it might just be that - a sticker since they can easily be replaced(unless the owner replaced the proc), I really cannot see any reason why HP would install mobile chips in one and DTR in another laptop of the same model...
