Hello,
I just received my dv7t and I noticed that the noisy fan is constantly blowing. I am just running Firefox. I did change the BIOS setting to turn off the "Fan Always On". According to CPUID, my P8400 is in the low 40C and GT 9600GT is at 50C.
The same laptops at Costco and Fry's are dead quiet with little air blowing out. I checked by putting my hand in the rear of the laptop.
Why is their a big difference in fan noise between my laptop and those at the retailers?
What can I do to reduce the fan noise? I heard good things about the Zalman coolers. I love the laptop except for the noisy fan noise.
Thanks in advance.

Enable the "Fan Always On" mode in the BIOS. Then, the fan will keep spinning at a constant, low fan speed most of the time.
I have the dv4t. In my case, disabling the "Fan Always On" mode makes more noise than enabling it. That's because the temperature at which the fan stops spinning with the mode disabled is about 34 degrees Celsius while the temperature at which the fan begins spinning is about 50 degrees Celsius. Once the CPU temperature reaches the 50-degree C level, the fan spins louder than it would do with the "Fan Always On" mode enabled. That's the medium fan speed that the fan can reach. The problem is that it is really difficult to reach the 34-degree C level even at the medium, loud fan speed unless you have a cooler or something like that.
Therefore, I learned that just keeping the "Fan Always On" mode on is better than disabling it. -
It seems like my dv5t is a lot louder after I reformatted and reinstalled drivers...
Before my fan was dead silent and now it's quite noticeable... -
Hi ScoopyScrapy. How is your dv7t now? I got my dv7t today. Have the same problem. The fan is too noisy. Even has whistling sound. I also have a compaq 8710p, which is more quiet.
Anyone can help me? -

I also changed the BIOS setting so the fan wasn't set to ALWAYS ON. I also used an Antec Notebook Cooler that has worked well with my old Toshiba notebook, but the fan in the dv7t still cycled on every few minutes and was always very distracting! The fan is so noisy, it would prevent me from using my laptop in a setting with other people, such as a classroom or library.
I also had the 2.26GHz Intel P8400 processor and 512mb nVIDIA 9600M GT graphics card. Based on what some other NBR users have said, the fans don't cycle as often with the less powerful 9200M GS graphics card. But they're just as audible when running, regardless of graphics card.
I was very disappointed. Back in May 2007, I bought a new HP dv9000t (the 17" predecessor to the dv7t) and I loved it. I sold it to a friend a while back only because I needed something more portable. But I was disappointed that the dv7t didn't deliver the same fantastic experience as the dv9000t did.
Hopefully HP will find a way to silence the fans. I now have a Dell Studio 15 (2.5GHz T9300 processor and 256mb ATI HD 3450 graphics) and the fan is running right now, but it's barely a hum....much like my previous laptops.
For the meantime, at least the HP customer service folks I've spoken with have all been very pleasant. Within the 21-day return window, they actually make it very simple to return a CTO (configure-to-order) sytem. -
Thanks for the heads up guys, I was planning to buy this laptop.. now I don't know which notebook to buy.

It hardly makes sense that the HDX16t has the same choice of processor and all have the 9600M GT graphics but they manage to have a fun that doesn't wake the neighbors up...go figure! -
Thanks for all the reply. I am considering to change to other notebook.
