Has anyone bought a HP DV8000t and upgraded the RAM using a different brand, other than using HP RAM? I am thinking of purchasing the DV8000t with the base 512MB DDR2 SDRAM (2x256MB) from hpshopping.com and then upgrading it to 2GB of RAM. Which non-HP brand RAM is compatible?
What brand did you choose and from where? If possible, can you post the model number of the RAM itself? Thank you!

You can definitely use other brands. The HP brand I'm pretty sure is "Infineon." Don't focus on the brand as much as the speed and type. Crucial is a good brand.

Crucial
Corsair
Transcend
Patriot
All good brands -
As long as the specifications match what HP requires, you're okay.
I personally went for Kingston memory. I bought an additional 512 MB stick of RAM and slipped it in after two weeks of having the computer. I'm at 1GHz now. I didn't see much need to go up to 2GHz, nor was I really able to find (readily) 1GHz around some of my retailers.
Just double check that HP didn't just put in one stick of 512MB. I know they did that with a few of their DV series to get the 512 rating. -

Sandra brings up this result on my dv8000t:
So what you're looking for is 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) memory. Here are the filtered results from New Egg:

On an interesting side note, it looks like our memory is interchangeable with Apple Intel iMacs
EDIT: Ooooh, I just checked the price of the 1GB replacement part on HP's support website -- $588 US !!!!! -
Thanks for posting up the pix and the specs DrewN!

hey guys,
I'll be receiving my HP DV8000T in a couple days, and I'll be replacing the ram most likely.
My question is, at first I was going to get Corsair ram from:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145012
But, now I'm thinking about getting OCZ ram here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227099
My question is, I'm confused by this whole PC2 5300 and PC2 5400.
Will the PC2 5400 work on my DV8000T?
THanks guy, appreciate any help in advance. -
well, i have heard that there have been some compatibility issues with the pc5400 ram. i would just stick with the 5300 to be sure....
-
im thinking of getting this ram for my dv2000z when it gets here. Everyone I talk to really like transcend. I have also had good luck with corsair and crucial.

Have you considered memory from Crucial (Micron)? It's more expensive but it should last longer than your laptop. I've experimented with the other brands (including those you've mentioned) and have spent countless hours chasing STOP errors (blue-screens-of-death, BSODs) and various other anomalous errors only to discover the problem was due to defective RAM. Keep that in mind.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies.
I think gmb is right, Crucial is the way to go, although it double the price.
With corsair and other brands, it seems as though it's "hit or miss" if you get a good stick or not.
Thanks again. -

thanks vassil! im seriously considering switching to crucial... its not much more and it sounds like the chances of success are much higher, ill post when i decide!
thanks again,
Samuel
edit: it is that much more! lol, i think i will go with transcend after talking with a friend who put it in his turion lappy. He siad it was easy install and it works really well! I will post with results! -
TBH I now have 8 sticks of OCZ's 533Mhz and 667Mhz ram in my different Laptops, and it outperforms anything I throw at it. I would stick with OCZ.
OCZ 1GB DDR2 667 (PC2 5400)
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820227099
OCZ 1GB DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820227110
Both sets work in my dz8000 and dv8000t -
Hey Sledge,
I wanted to get the OCZ PC5400 ram too, but I was worried it would cause problems because it wasn't PC5300.
What do you think, there should no problems huh? -
IM running it now on my dv8000t which I am typing from... It runs like a champ! I was able to see a large increase in performance by adding 2 x 1 gig chips over what HP offers.
-
so I also own a DV8000t, its been great and I absolutely love this machine, how ever the time has come to get rid of these two 512's and swap in a couple of nice 1024's. I really like the cheapness of those sticks mentioned above, and I will be ordering them very soon. I am an expert on Desktop PC's, and this is my first laptop. So, with that being said, does anyone know where I can get my hands on a manual or text which tells me how to replace the RAM in this laptop? I greatly appreciate any help and thank you in advance
-
The service manual for the dv8000t explains pretty much how to disassemble the notebook. It also includes instructions on how to access the memory modules...

Alternatively this guide should also be useful...

kingston HAS a lot of problems with their current lineup.... most of them give errors on core duo within 4 h other never 100% stable... (the sticks are ok but the chips they use are not 100% compatible with the memory controller on core duo)
ALWAYS check the chips on the sticks... Micron, Hynix, Infineon(Quimonda) are 100% stable
