So I'm looking to purchase a 6 cell battery for mydv1000t. But HP wants something like $130 plus tax. I've seen a compatible battery on various websites ranging from $80 to $100. But they same "manufactured to OEM specs" or "our own brand". What should I look for in purchasing a battery from someplace other than HP?

A good dose of luck
Seriously, there's no way of telling. Fair chance you'll be buying the exact same battery as the HP without the HP sticker, or you paying for some cheap knock off. -
Late last year, I had seen CompUSA sell em sometimes for about $100, maybe you should wait for those or something???

Was this the battery your looking at? I was thinking of picking one of these up for my v2000z. I like the 12 cell battery and all, but sometimes I just want to be thin and light >_<

This does, however, seem to be the same battery, and for $85, not a bad deal! -
I think you will find non-HP batteries for much cheaper price around $50. I think( I think), if you pick one from JAPAN( made in JAPAN) most probably it would be as good as HP. Few years ago we bought few batteries like that for Dell Latittudes and proven to be as good as Original Dell batteries for half the price.
Anyways, Keep that in mind, that was my observation. -
That's similar to all the other generic batteries I'm looking at. I wonder if laptop batteries are "you get what you pay for". I bought some AA batteries from Walgreens and they were terrible - Duracell was better. The flip side is the ridiculous markup for accessories that companies like HP charge - shipping and tax are a deal breaker.

I've never used a generic battery but I've heard they should be avoided (too much luck involved, I guess).
I would try ebay for some original batteries -
I purchaserd $9 battery for my dcam instead of $55 original Canon price. Well, after a few month the battery started to fluctuate and turn off my camera erratically. I still use it, and at 4.5-times cheaper price I don't complain too much. (at leat it did not burn the camera yet)
Now, with notebooks you can save 2 times at best. In this case having a piece of mind seems a good idea, doesn't it? -
I found a new, open item genuine HP battery on ebay for $70 and purchased it. The seller had over 100 positive feedback, so I felt ok about it. I'll let you guys know how it is when I receive it.
Non-HP battery quality
