If I'm using my laptop at home, should I take the battery out and run it on AC power or leave the battery in it and run with AC power?

Am I hurting the PC by using it with no battery?

Of course when I take my laptop to school I use the battery, but for home use what is the best way?

Sorry for the noob question.

Its fine to run it without a battery.. Ive been doing this for years, it actually helps preserve the batterys life

The only downfall is if you accidentally unplug the AC or theres a power outage in your area the computer will completely turn off since theres no battery back up

Thanks flip. You always help me. :p
    =D

Oh and about the ram issue. I haven't had a chance to go to Fry's to get my ram, but I read that ram problem that one girl had with the BIOS. Do I need to update my BIOS too? How do you go about doing that?

yeah don't plug it in. you'll ruin your battery. i didn't know you were supposed to take out the battery when you plug it in. i did that for a year and now my battery lasts 15minutes

No problem. I wouldnt say that it makes that much of significant damage to your battery. My first laptop could hold over 1 hour+ charge and i never took it out for a year or two

Which model do you have? Its only the early models of the dv series that needs a BIOS update

    I have a DV2550se.

EDIT: Will my laptop get hotter without the battery in?
    Should I get a cooler?

Your model can handle 4gb memory without any bios updates. Even check the HP brochure that comes in the box with it

No your laptop wont get any hotter without the battery in. In fact its the opposite, the battery gets warm when it is being charged or used. Yes i recommend getting a laptop cooler if you leave your computer ON alot or if you do alot of gaming and intensive stuff

    Ok thanks.

One thing I hate using AC power with battery out. When you turn off laptop, my comp just restarts because the AC power is plugged in...if i unplug AC power then my laptop turns off "bad"(not using Start>Shutdown). Is there a way to shut down the computer with AC plugged and not having it restart? =x

    Are you on vista??

Are you sure your pressing the shutdown button? If your shutting down from teh start bar using the red power button, this might be set to restart instead of shutdown

Go to your power options and set "change what my power button does". Put it to Shutdown

    Yes, vista.

    I'm going to Start>shutdown.
I don't think its set to restart cuz when my AC isn't plugged in and I shut it down, it shuts down.
    Ill check though

Yeah...it still restarts when I go to Start>click that small arrow>Shut Down.

    Damn AC charger...

Try it flip. Plug your AC charger in and Shut Down. It will restart...

I have an old zv6005us that my wife now uses and we never removed the battery while on AC power and the battery still holds a charge. You can leave the battery in and it won't hurt anything, just completely discharge the battery once in a while.

Could you clarify what you mean by "Start> shutdown"? Are you clicking on the arrow beside the lock button or just the red button? Hover over the red button and see what it does. This should help:

Go to Control Panel--> Hardware and Sound--> Power Options
On the left column, click on Choose what the power button do

As I said before, yeah I click the arrow>shutdown.
I don't click that red power button, so that's not a problem.
If my AC power isn't plugged in, and I shut it down. It's fine.
The problem is when my AC power is plugged in, I shut it down, it starts back up...=[

this may help, prob wont. turn off the comp and remove the batt and AC adapter. Then keep the power button pressed for 30 seconds. This should get rid of any static.

I think flipfire said if you do that, you just reset the CMOS settings.

Keeping the Battery on while plugged in AC doesn't hamper or damage the battery enough. It only happens if the battery heats up! My isn't so I can be rest assured that mine is fine!

One thing I noticed. When my battery is in and my laptop is off with AC plugged in, it doesn't restart on its own. However, when AC is plugged in with battery out and laptop off, it will restart.
Anyone know the reasons behind this?
