Hi, I'm the happy owner of a HP ENVY 17 which I bought used earlier this year. Not entirely sure if it is a late 2010 or 2011 model, here are the basic specs:

    Intel i7 1.6Ghz
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    2x 500GB 7200RPM HDDs
    ATi HD 5850 Mobility

My question is, what are the average temps of the laptop when it's idle and when it's under pressure. My temps on my CPU are about 66-70C when just surfing the web, watching videos, etc. and when I'm gaming (Primarily Crysis 3) it runs around 83-86C. And my GPU is around 65C when idle and around 80-82C when under pressure.

I haven't experienced any crashes of any sort when gaming, and I've used it for a few months, and even the high demanding games run smoothly with a few tweaks to the video settings.. But I want to make sure that the temps aren't so high that it could damage the hardware.

    What do you guys think?

this is a pre-2000 model, so built in march 2011 at the latest.
the temps are perfectly ok and even surprising low for the usual ones when gaming on these notebooks.

usually when stressed really much for some 30+mins, CPU temps of 90+ and GPU of 98-100+ °C would be "expectable". depending on the condition of the notebook and its cooling, these temps may be stable, but in worse cases may not be.

anyway, feel lucky with the temps you have, as the i7-720qm and mobility 5850 inside the envy 1000 series get much hotter usually, so in case it gets worse, dont be surprised. monthly cleaning of the vent and motherboard is essential, if gaming a lot.
