I am not sure if I should've posted this in the os/software section but...
i have a dv2000t that shipped with vista home premium. before i read that you can have a clean install using the anytime upgrade DVD, i had used wipedrive pro to format the entire hard disk and get rid of all partitions after making my recovery discs and burning the swsetup folder. i then used my anytime upgrade cd to install a fresh copy of vista home premium, which worked like a charm. i am just not able to update the product key....not even in admin mode

now, i decided to try to use the recovery discs to start over to keep the oem cert and what not buy....the recovery discs say they arent able to recover my laptop even though its still running the same vista home premium.
any ideas/thoughts? i would like to be able to use my recovery discs so that it can load the correct product key....i have 28days from today![]()

Same thing happened to me. I went to restore XP from the recovery disks I created and it failed...

hopefully someone with more insight can shed some light, cause it makes no sense to me whatsoever.
at first i thought it was a model compatability cause i had vista ultimate after my original format but since the discs said it wasnt compatible, i reinstalled with home premium and still no go....
so theres gotta be something holding it back... -
If you boot the notebook with the correct recovery discs, it should remove everything you have done to the notebook and takes a few hours to finish completely. It the recovery discs are not working, you need to contact HP and get the recovery disc replaced with one that will work.

i made recovery discs following HP's instructions when i first got the laptop, then proceeded to format it using wipedrive pro, so i definitely have the right discs.
i'll try to give hp a call. i hope they dont try to charge me for em... -
I've heard of this happening before, where the user-made recovery discs were not able to restore the system. There should be an older thread floating around this forum about it. Don't know if a solution was ever found though (aside from having HP send out the oem discs as a replacement)..........

If they do charge you, they aren't very expensive. Try going through HP Chat even though you know they can't do anything and after they fail to fix your problem try to get them to send a restore disc for free. Also, when I had a similar trouble before, I had to leave the disc in there for a long time while it tried and eventually it spun up properly and worked. Once it got going it was ok.

I guess the first thing I will do when i get my 6500t is create the recovery disks and recover my machine to make sure the disks work

HP sold me the wrong recovery disc set and when I complained it didn't work on my model notebook, they sent me a 2nd set at no charge. Of course, the 2nd set didn't work either because it was still wasn't the correct recovery disc for my notebook. They are both in perfect condition and for sale. 64-bit versions of Vista Ultimate for somebody's HP notebook. I just gave up after that and installed from scratch.
I needed the 64-bit Recovery DVD "444387-001", but they sold me the 64-bit Recovery DVD "443702-001" which will not work in my notebook then replaced the wrong DVD at no charge with the wrong DVD, again!
