My Presario V6310US battery wont charge to 100%, Windows usualy reports that it's at about 41% but never higher.

Does this usualy indicate a battery on its way out? The laptop isn't extremely old so it seems odd. My Gateway is older and has no problems.

You probably just need to calibrate your battery to your system Power Monitor. It's something that few people know about, and even fewer know to do. If you don't calibrate it, you can get a false reading.

The following link is to the Battery FAQ's for your system, and includes the link to the Battery Calibration procedure. It's toward the bottom of the list.

Not to worry you but it could also mean something is wrong with your hardware. I thought my Sager was reporting an incorrect charge (it stayed stuck at 77% and would go down but never up) after I got it back from an RMA, but it turns out the motherboard wasn't charging it, and it was in fact reporting the correct charge %. I had to send it in again.

And then last month it died. And that's my wonderful story.

I downloaded the Battery Checker software for XP, my battery status changes from good to failure at random and then back. I am assuming I am having a problem with the battery. I don't have a lot of experience with notebooks, mostly desktops, but the Compaq's battery sure doesn't have much of a life-span.

I will try calibrating it though.

However, the calibration instructions say to let it charge to 99-100%, since mine never reports 100%, should I try it from the max it'll charge to?
