Hi, I have an old HP notebook computer and I tried to do a fresh install by using the recovery DVD's but it's not working and its looping me to this message every time I try "The Recovery process was canceled. Remove the disc and click OK to restart and continue the process. Otherwise, reinstall the disc and click Cancel to start over." I've clicked on both ok and cancel in different instances with no success. my question is....

Is there a way to install XP without the recovery CD on a notebook? Like a fresh install on any desktop computer going through the bootdisk, then install xp through the cd?

Is it possible to boot linux ubuntu and do a fresh install?

    thanks

Yes, you can use a plain HP or Compaq WinXP install CD... if you can find one. The license key that pairs with the CD is embedded in the BIOS. HP used to include plain CDs, they stopped a couple of years ago. Afterwards you'd install drivers and what not as needed.

Ubuntu should install easily. You might as well go straight to 64-bit Ubuntu (or Fedora, etc) if you have an AMD CPU or an Intel Core2Duo.

Which model HP notebook do you have?

If you have a win. xp cd you should be ableto do a clean install. Also are you using the recovery cd that came with that laptop or did it come with a diffrent laptop?
