Whenever I carry the notebook in closed-lid form, holding its hinge joint in my hand, I feel it loose and shaky. Battery feels as if its hollow, but I dont thing its not reason enough to send it back. How do you feel abt your notebook build??

Its brand new, just received it on 18th feb. I now know HP notebooks aren't that strongly built, but is a squeaking sound under right palm acceptable?? It happens when I rest my palm on the edge of notebook, just to the right of mousepad (on the edge in between mousepad and fingerprint reader). Its small sound and for most part I dont even care. But when working in silence, when I lay my palm or rest my wrist on the edge, that sound makes me feel as if top half-bottom joint is loose there.... Hell, its brand new and it squeaks like a old toy loosing glue in its plastic joint, but it does it on that specific 3-4 inch edge only... Do I need to worry??? Should I talk to HP abt it. I guess I am within 21 days policy thing.

EDIT: I have uploaded a 3gp/mp4 file that I made using my cell phone. Probably it can do a better job of explaining whats happening than me.

you mean the left cause there is nothing under the right side. on the left is the C:\ Drive, the heat that it generates cause the plastic covering it expands making it squeaky when rest upon. if it is really the right side and really close to the trackpad then it is the RAM with the samething happening.

this is the only explaining i could come up with.

To be exact, I can generate the squeak noise if I press with my thumb on the edge of notebook directly below 'right shift' key and exactly under 'down' key.... and its really prominent squeak when pressed with thumb.

its just a lose top case, try and narrow down where this loose snap on the top case. When you find it, using your thumb push down, then pull out on the top case, and using your index and middle fingers push the bottom case in.

let us know how it goes.

Thanks FunnyX for the instructions, but I didnt seem to get it. I am pressing hard where it squeaks and it just gets pressed like a button, but I tried my thumb and all fingers and squeezed the edge between my fingers also, but couldn't get it to work. So I uploaded a 3gp file with renamed extension to mp4 (I dont have 3gp codec on my pc).. hopefully this could explain little better what kind of sound its making.
Plz do share what you think it is....

I have exactly the same thing on my dv2799 that I recieved yesterday, it's the right side under the fingerprint reader that creaks for me.

It does sound exactly like pressing a button and it's actually quite satisfying pressing it down!

I don't really mind it, nothings perfect :(

check the tightness of the screw(s) directly under that area, when all the screws are tightened properly the casing shouldn't make any noises.

Depending on where I place my hand, there is an occasionaly creaking noise. I really think it's just the type of plastic they use. Maybe the ends are unfinished and when you put weight on it, they rub together.

I just tightened the two screws near the creaking, it helped a little but there is still creaking in the area :(

Tomorrow I will take a look at those models and see if I can't find a way for it to stop creaking. it may be that one of the plastic hooks are bent down, preventing it from locking properly.

FunnyX, did you get around to finding a clue what might be causing this and how to possibly stop it??
Thanks for coming out to rescue... :)

    3 week old DV9700.
You know mine is not a squeek from resting my hand along the edge but a rather annoying rattle when I type. I know what it is too, it's the mechanism for the latch that holds the lid down. With the lid up and typing normally the latches rattle....obviously loose in there. If I press the lid release button in and it holds the latches over, then the noise won't happen. Thats how I know. They need some felt or something down under there.

Sorry, I've been a little busy.

I did however look into it, for what ever reason hp decided to not put a locking clip in that spot, I found that almost every unit with that model # had the same issue, I assume it is because they thought there would be less room and the mini-PCMCIA slot would fit just right, or they for consistency's sake they would just have to live with on side being more empty then the other. I've been trying to think of ways to possibly remedy this issue, but I can't seem to think of anything practical to do... most involve wedging something either inside to hold up that side of the case or sticking something between the 2 pieces of rubbing plastic... both seem very 'caveman'-ish... you could try adding some kind of lubricant to keep it from being noticed as much, but be very careful, just a drop should do... but still this isn't the solution I want to give you, unfortunately its the only thing i can think of...
