I ordered my dv5t with Vista home premium 32 bit. I did this because I didn't want to get stuck not being able to use some of my programs in 64 bit. I keep seeing that it is possible to upgrade without buying a retail disc, and possibly getting it from the vendor, in this case, HP. Is this true? Are there any links anyone can point me to? I've already seen the thread in these forums.

I don't want to upgrade versions of Vista. I will stay with the home premium version, I just would like to try the 64 bit version.

I don't really see why you would need to "try" the 64-bit... it's just like 32-bit only some programs don't work (especially Windows 3.1 programs)

64bit is faster and more secure. Its the future.

Im afraid HP will not provide you with Vista discs.

You also get to use more RAM, and 64 bit has shown some improvement in performance over 32 bit in some areas.

You can order it off MS marketplace for the price of shipping if I remember correctly.

    Yes, you can.

I already knew about the RAM part... just not the performance part.

what is faster would you say?

Thanks. I understand the benefits of 64 bit operating systems. I plan on using a 64 bit version of Linux (which version yet unknown, either Ubuntu or FC9).

I do have other programs I use that I know work under Vista 32. I didn't want to buy a notebook with Vista 64, and then be forced to downgrade immediately, which is why I wanted to "try" it.

As far as Marketplace goes, I was under the notion that they won't help unless you have retail versions - this will be an OEM version from HP.
