Is there a way to install a wireless card into a laptop that never came with a factory installed card? No need to mess with the wireless card sticking out the side.

depends on the model, if it had the option to come with one built in there is probably a slot for it, but if it wasn't an option you can't add an internal one.
Another HP usually locks the motherboard down so you'd have to add the same model that would've come in it had you bought a laptop with the wireless already installed.

I don't think that wlan chip is an upgradable option on a mother board unless you know how to tear the whole laptop apart [ :)]

Safer and cheaper to stick a wlan adapter [ :D]

Getting to the internal miniPCI slot where the WLAN adaptor sits was trivial on my zv5000z, but like Quikster said, HP has locked out non-HP wireless miniPCI cards in the BIOS. Also, HP may not have included antenna panels with notebooks that didn't ship with WLAN cards, in which case your wireless range will be limited to perhaps a foot. A PCMCIA 802.11 card is the safest bet.

I know with my old Dell, the Antennae were all there, I just had to install the TrueMobile card and connect the anntenae (as instructed with the install guide that came with it...I would give HP a call and ask.

Getting to the mini pci slot on the ZE4000 series is easy. Getting a mini pci wireless card is easy...the only problem you will have is how to turn it on and off, also the internal antenna...unless your notebook has one installed already. I think your just better off buying PCMCIA card.
