    u know.... 1 stick of 512Mb is more expensive than 2X256 u should be happy instead.

    and later you can add another ram without worrying about "what should I do with the old 256 sticks?"

    Actually, I think what you saw when you opened your notebook was 1 256MB stick. The other is soldered to your motherboard - hence why your "memory max" is only 1.25 GB. You can take the 256 MB stick you saw out and replace it with up to a 1 GB stick.

    That's what it all means.

    The other SODIMM slot is located under the keyboard. Unplug, remove the battery, remove the four screws along the bottom back edge of the notebook, pry off the bezel above the keyboard, unscrew the keyboard. HP doesn't want to encourage users to crack open their machines so they say you're limited to 1.25GB even though it really isn't true. I upgraded my zv5000z (same layout but with the superior AMD64 CPU) to 2GB (Crucial PC2700 RAM).
