Are you tired of getting BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH when you try to update your graphic card driver on your beast Envy ?
I have the solution !
For those want a preset of overclock config, create a short cut of AMDGPUClocktool ( download here) and edit the target like this "X:\Program Files\HP GPU Clock Tool\AMDGPUClockTool.exe" -eng=599 -mem=1075" this is my High/Performance/Gaming setting, normally when it starts up, I let it automatically underclocked (put the shortcut in startup folder) at -eng=150 -mem=350

Please do acknowledge that if you are going to follow my steps to get the driver installed. You are experimenting it at your own risk.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Create a SYSTEM RESTORE POINT just in case !
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
READ THIS/MUST DO BEFORE INSTALL ANY MODIFIED DRIVER:
uninstall the current driver & always install latest modded driver over the latest HP driver
(run ATI setup, uninstall everything; it won't uninstall driver, go to device manager -> uninstall the GPU driver, it will turn to stock VGA driver -> let windows update the driver-8.712)
------------------------------------------------------
I am no longer using the Envy line so I won't be able to keep up with the drivers and mod for you all, but here is a guide, if there's any question, feel free to post in this thread.
------------------------------------------------------
Last Update - DIY Guide:
1. Download the driver package
2. Unpack it and go to X:\ATI\Support\xxxxxxxx\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF
3. Find the driver name starts with CHxxxxxx.inf
4. Open it with notepad
5. Find the following (underlined):
[Manufacturer] - add or replace so it has the bold parts
%ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTamd64.6.0
[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.0] - check the section in spoiler, you only need to replace the bold lines until you see

Good work! trying it now... Might be worth posting a link to this thread on the envy 15 driver thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-drivers-software-forum/426181-drivers-hp-envy-15-intel-104.html
I knew that it was an issue with the inf files from comparing the ati and hp 10.3 drivers, did not think about the signatures! -
Let me know if it works. I can't spot the any improvements so far (barely play games beside iPad), but it's always beter to have it running on latest driver.
The only reason I can think of for the signature requirement is that HP wants the laptop to run on their configuration of clock -
Didn't work mate. Tried both drivers you linked to 11.9 (8.890) and 10.8 (8.762), with test mode enabled. Followed the procedure you had set out with 8.90. BSODs with both.
Did you install the driver on top of another driver or did you start afresh (uninstalled the old driver first)? Also with 8.890 did you use DSEO to sign the two ati system files after installation? -
I started from HP 8.712 -> 10.8(8.762) -> 11.9(8.890) . And no, I did not sign any .inf . Did you restart and see Test Mode on the bottom right corner before you update the driver (through device manager) ?
P.s : for 8.762, I did not modify anything, just updated through device manager -
EDIT 2: I GOT IT WORKING WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS FROM POST 4
Cool, i'll try it that way with 8.712 first. I had it removed before i started
Yeah it was in test mode when i tried it i saw the watermark in the corner of the desktop
EDIT: Still doesn't work.... Any suggestions as to what I should try? I've had catalyst 11.4 run ok-ish in the past. Might give that a go again...
Using Windows 7 x64, Happy to accept that it could be failing due to my current windows setup... God only knows how many different driver and inf file variations I've tried on it. Has anyone else got it working? -
I'm at school now, I'll find the inf I used and upload for you to try.
We need more testers... -
thanks, don't rush it's getting towards bedtime in London
. Oh +1 rep as well - I appreciate the time you've taken in trying to get these drivers working and sharing your methods with us
-
Unfortunately, I deleted the whole folder after I got it done. However, I unpack it again and try the original Cxxxxxxx.inf (8.89 MobilityMod) without modify it. It still works, it asks to confirm installtion without signature -> click yes -> screen turns black -> "-" flickers in the middle of the screen a few times -> screen turns back on and (Aero is still enabled).
I have no clear idea how it didn't work for you.
Can you run msinfo32 -> components -> display
and paste the PNP Device ID & Adapter Type & Driver here
p.s I think I have found the problem. If you go to *system root*/driver/ The atipmdag.sys that I have is from HP 8.712 driver, and right now as I am typing, running on 11.10 preview2, everything works, atikmdag.sys + atikmpag.sys are from 11.10 preview2. Only atipmdag.sys is old.
And I think most bsod happens because of atipmdag, correct me if I'm wrong
Weird thing is I couldn't find atipmdag.sys anywhere in HP 8.712 extract.
brt, check your atipmdag.sys for me, then I'll test the 11.10preview2 with youAttached Files:

i was following the drives hp envy post, is this true??? thanks bro ill try it later and ill post the results
-
it's true and I have not written an official guide yet, I need some testers first..
-
lets try 11.9 with me and what chipset driver do you have
can it be the problem ???
just tell me what to do for 11.9 and i will test it
greetings from south america
ps: i can see that you tried battlefield 3 beta, does it works properly with 11.9 at least without lags?? -
Just PMed you. And for BF3, Beta closed today, couldn't try it
-
PNP Device ID: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_94A0&SUBSYS_7009103C&REV_00\4&FCD57A6&0&0018
Adapter type : ATI display adapter (0x94A0), ATI Technologies Inc. compatible
Driver : c:\windows\system32\drivers\atikmpag.sys (8.14.1.6099, 184.50 KB (188,928 bytes), 02/03/2010 22:07)
I have the atipmdag.sys file, size 6.10mb, modified 02/03/2010 Same as yours - there are references to atipmdag.sys in the inf for 8.712 but not in 11.10 preview 2, so it may be that the file is not relevant to these drivers anymore? -
Ok, if you have downlaoded the 11.10previewb2
Download my driver folder (11.10previewbeta2) and just overwrite the existing one.
Run the setup -> custom -> update everything.
Screen should go black and flicker the "-" then turn back on
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Now if replacing my files doesn't work, try add the following to CH&C7 .inf (they the same you can just edit one and copy&paste to the other one) :
[r300.Mppxy]
atipmdag.sys,atikmdag.sys
only HP driver has this
[AMD_Service_Inst_M9x7] & [AMD_Service_Inst_Manhattan]
ServiceBinary = %12%\atipmdag.sys
ATI Drivers has atikmdag.sys not atipmdag.sys, strange.
But when I ran mine, I didn't have to do all these, I just had to modify [ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.0] in the .inf. Which I have included in the rar file.
And there's no atipmdag.sys or atipmdag.sy in HP 8.712 extract anywhere. Beside it's mentioned in the inf
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have included the driver info files that worked and were used to install the driver from C:\Windows\inf for you to snoop..
oem92 - 8.762.0.0000
oem93 - 8.890.0.0000
oem95 - 8.901.2.0000
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By the way, what bsod error did you run into, atikm or atipm.
I found this article regarding atikmdag.sys bsod. And atipmdag.sys bsod article , some guys claim you need to install BSOD-proof MSE....
Side thing, have you updated your intel chipset from the driver thread. -
Thanks will give all that a try. I've reverted my laptop to a clean install of windows 7 x64 to avoid any issues with previous attempts at installing these drivers
Incidently you have a lower version of direct3d to me acording to that screenshot of catalyst control center you posted earlier. Mine is 8.14.10.0735Yours is 7.14.10.0860. This is on a clean win7 sp1 install, with only the 8.712 hp drivers and winrar installed
It was atikmdag.sys that was causing the bsods, don't remeber ever seeing atipmdag.sys on the bsods.... -
If it's atikmdag, I assume when you update the driver manually or through ati setup, it doesn't install the latest atikmdag
-
I think it ll take a while if you do a fresh install of w7..
And actually as I just read on guru3d. It's the correct direct3d version
-
It works! Thank you!
Steps taken
Installed catalyst 10.3 (8.712 HP Driver)
Activated Test Mode
Installed 11.10 Preview 2 with you files edited as you suggested in your post earlier. Installed through device manager > have disk > chose the 1st option on the list.
trying the inf files as you uploaded them resulted in a bsod 0x00000116
Need to update catalyst control center to get 2d driver versions etc... will update when i do
EDIT: Versions are now the same as yours, I will upload the modified infs for others to try.... -
Glad to hear that, now you just need to update the software. I ran bad company 2 to get some results last night. Got 40 fps at 1600x900, all medium MSAA 2x and 4x AF
-------
BRT when you have installed the latest software. Go to my update post and download the Catalyst.reg, it unlocks 1600x900 + 1366x768 resolutions, High Quality AF & Geometry Instancing Direct3D -
I'm lost, so it didn't work with my inf files. What did you do then ?
-
-
Oh so you did not modify [ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.0]. I see
-
With respect to the ATI drivers the inf files starting c7... correspond to win 7
and those stating ch... correspond to vista, hence in the infs :
c7 ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.1
ch ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.0
I've uploaded the modified infs for you to look at: http://www.multiupload.com/8T2S8SGW7E -
I never knew that....... I see it now, so w7 users go for the c7
edit: strangely enough, I ran the CH one and it works -
-
I just checked your inf, both C7 and CH has [ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.0] & CH126548.CAT.
But yeah anyway, we got it working, so that's great. I feel so lonely in this thread haha, nobody else has looked at this -
-
he has not indeed. Oh wellll
-
i'm following this thread for sometime now
great work guys indeedbut please please write the final guide to to this in one post so n00bs like me can separate the final solution from the trial and error
i was waiting for this for a long time for a solution for my envy 15 please give it to me now
love from EGYPT -
PS : I'm running a broken driver now with no areo with windows lagging as hell i was trying for days to install it tried cleaning and reinstalling but with no luck
-

or something like that ive downloaded the file named wild05kid05-8.901.2.zip
from brt now whats the procedure then to make it work -
What driver are you using now (which works) and what driver are you trying to install (that gives you the error which you posted above)?
If you want to use the modified infs i uploaded, install through device manager, select the have disk option and browse to the folder which has the infs, select the inf which starts ch_____.inf and install.
@wolverin99. The first posts have been updated as we go along. So follow the instructions and they should work. Once we know for sure what works and what doesn't, i guess wild05kid05 will update those posts further. For me following the instructions on post 4 (update 3) worked
@wild05kid05. I've deactivated test mode and the laptop starts up and works fine with the 11.10 drivers and the modified infs. Bit strange but there you go.... Overclocked to 600gpu/900mem with temps at 75C when running furmark. -
It's hard to write a final guide now, since we don't know what's the main problem, brt ran into different things and resolved it differently than I did. I suppose you should follow brt's steps first.
@brt: go for 1050 mem haha -
thanks to my hero @wild05kid05 for this wonderful thread and effort !
I really appreciate it man !
now I'm running the latest 11.10 driver with no problems i followed the steps until 4th post and it worked although i installed the component first before the driver
i can't thank you enough though
keep up the good work -
Hi,
You're not alone! I'm reading the thread! I've been looking for a way to get the latest drivers on my envy for ages! Well done for sorting it out! I'm a bit of a n00b too, so will readily await a n00b guide to avoid the endless cycles of BSOD -> restore -> BSOD...you get the picture.
Thanks so much -
I've been playing around with these drivers a bit more, to try and establish what needs to be done to get these to install.

Pre-requisites
1. Install
HP ATI Mobility HD4830 8.712 Drivers (sp48427) - ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp48001-48500/sp48247.exe - New drivers will not install without this! I got BSODs trying to install 11.10 without having this first
New Driver Installation Procedure
2. Download
- Drivers
ATI Catalyst 11.10 Preview 2 - Catalyst 11.10 B2 Preview Win Vista 7 32 and 64-bit download from Guru3D.com
- Modded INFs
by wild05kid05 - Modded INFs with edits
Extract both and overwrite contents of ati driver folder (default location is C:\AMD\AMD_Catalyst_11.10_preview2_Win7_Vista) with contents of modded INF.
Install via control panel>device manager>display adapters...
Right click on ATI Mobility Radeon HD4830 Series and select "update drivers'
select browse my computer for driver software
select 'let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
select 'have disk'
select 'browse'
then browse to the location of the modded inf files (default location is C:\AMD\AMD_Catalyst_11.10_preview2_Win7_Vista\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF) and select CH126548.inf
select 'ok'
select the first option 'ATI Mobility Radeon HD4830 Series'
hit 'next'
driver should install, screen goes blank and comes back with aero enabled
N.B. So you definitely need the original HP drivers but you do not need to use DSEO
A few pictures and i think we have a decent guide! -
Thanks so much for this, and well done to both of you for working this out.
-
Also, I managed to do this just by replacing those folders with wild05kid05's and then running the ccc setup. Do you guys think anything will have gone wrong by doing it that way? I've restarted and there's no BSOD, but I'm still in Test Mode. I can turn test mode off now that I've completed installation, right? Again, thank you!
-
You didn't need test mode to begin with, so turning it off should give you no issues. -
@wild05kid05 I may not be reading this thread correctly. There are a lot of shots-in-the-dark, but no real concrete list of steps. Can someone clarify the steps and the driver modifications to get the latest Catalyst and 4830 driver working with an Envy 15 (1000t)?
1) Windows Update installs driver X, but that BSODs
2) Roll back driver to standard VGA.
3) Here is where it gets confusing Manually, Load ATI Driver 8.762 via Device Manager what do I have to modify in the INF? It seems, even though I dont get a BSOD the GPU is super slow to render and makes the computer unusable. After that I load Catalyst 10.3?
4) Than Manually, Load ATI Driver 8.890.0.0via Device Manager after modifying inf? Over top 8.762? Than load Catalyst 11.9 ? I get BSODs on this driver. IF I dont get a BSOD, windows just freezes at startup.
We almost need a proven step-by-step wiki on this one.
HP Should be burned at the stake for this one! -
2. Remove any drivers that you may have installed(start with the standard VGA driver) Start by installing the HP ATI drivers, the link is in my post above.
3. Install 8.901.2 (catalyst 11.10 pre2) straight over the top of the hp drivers after copying over the modified inf files.
For the installation of the drivers, you can go through device manager or you can install using the setup included with the ATI drivers - both will do the same thing...
With regards a step by step guide don't expect a definitive one soon. THIS PROCEDURE IS STILL EXPERIMENTAL AND SUBJECT TO CHANGES. However people are getting good results using it. I expect this will work for you. Report back with your results.
And lol @ 'HP Should be burned at the stake for this one!'
I agree. Before this I was contemplating using my desktop to play Rage and BF3, even though the hardware is more than up to the task. Now that we have up to date drivers, performance should be a lot better. -
It seems to be working! Although, I am kind of afraid to restart the machine.I will attempt this tonight after work.
Basically time-will-tell on this driver test. No problems yet.
On my previous attempt I thought I had the driver working fine , but after leaving it over night I came back to a BSOD loop. Let us hope this one has better luck.
Thanks again... I will keep you up-to-date on the health of this. -
Thank you BRT for set out a proper procedures, and yeah no one is sure of the main issue with the gpu & bios & driver.
@brt, i read somewhere, that each gpu of the same series does not always function the same as the other. Some can hit higher, some not so much. Therefore, slight difference in overclocking and performance is understandble -
HI
