Sounds like the high pitched noise that comes from the Core 2 Duo line of processors.

It's fine and it happens on many computers. It's usually a matter of how good your hearing is...those with more sensitive hearing usually pick it up. The best thing thing I can recommend is to set your power scheme to "Always On" in XP or "High Performance" in Vista. That *should* keep your processor running at the highest clock frequency...from what I've read those high pitched sounds occur when the processor changes it's operating speed rapidly.

I am curious to know since I have a dv9000 on the way:

a.) Does this high pitched issue happen on the majority of them?

b.) Realizing that this is a core 2 duo related issue and that other brands share the same processor, do other brands have a lower rate of high pitched sounds than HP? I've not heard this on the other brands, but then again I haven't really researched too in depth either.

c.) Are there any 'fixes' that don't mess with the battery life too much? How much reduction in battery life are we looking at with most of these 'quick fixes'?

I would take it back or exchange it...nothing worse then having some small thing that bugs ya about a new laptop. You will grow to really be annoyed by the noise. I had a dv9000 series system and it made no noise nor does my NX9420. If either made noise I would take it back. No matter what Intel or the mfg's say that is not normal behavior and has to be a flaw in the cpu/system board...

Its really odd because sometimes i hear a high pitched noise, but its never loud enough to bother me and goes away.

I have yet to hear it, and my hearing is (usually) pretty good. Maybe I got lucky.

    I would take it back.

i know its been said in the ultra noise thread, but you know you can disable p4 in the bios and the sound will disappear. supposedly it kills battery life, but i have yet to experience that.

Does anyone have any tests on how much it kills the battery life? Are we talking long term overall batterly life or the charge itself?

it basically drains the battery quicker when not using it in AC. thats cuz C4 is the deep sleep state for the CPU and basically that means the CPU cant go into that deep sleep in turn using more battery power.
