I got a dv6500t with the 8400m gs. Invidia is downplaying how bad the overheating issues are. I know Dells are failing allot and I am now concerned mine will burn out as well. I know if I tax my CPU just a little the fan will run at medium or more with fairly hot air coming out. I got the hi capacity 6 cell and I am lucky if I can get two hours out of it. I am thinking the 8400m gs is not so great on power and runs too hot. Anyway, does the 15 inch dv6500t or 6700 suffer from defective GPU failures? I'm thinking the 15" models probably have enough ventilation and room to disperse the heat. Dells 1330 thin designs seem to be frying the 8400's on a regular basis. Even the 1530's seem to have nvidia issues.

Anyway, more here on this issue: http://www.techcrunchit.com/2008/07/10/nvidia-tries-to-cover-up-defective-gpus/

...hmmmm, is this grounds for some type of recall?? I wouldn't mind getting a "replacement" for mine...you know, with DDR3 in it =D

I'd be interested to know too. I agree with you on the battery life, I have the standard battery and it never lasts more than an hour even doing something simple. Mine seems to get really hot around the hard disk panel for some reason. I doubt its to do with the graphics card but its a bit of a worry.

Its already struck HP a long time ago. Remember the recalls for all the pavilion models?

I believe this is what caused my go 7200 to fail unexpectedly

How much do you like a nice toasty 8600M GS cooked to 99C?

This is in a 17" by the way, and I had just received it back from HP Repairs the same day (today).

If this isn't defective, I'm not sure what is...

Yes, but now some reports are saying ALL 8400m gs and 86xx cards are defective. I'm thinking it may take longer for some cards to fry. :(

WOW 99C seems a real problem to me. As I write here my dv9500 nvidea card is running at 57c, all I have open is IE7 with 5 tabs and my nvidia 3D setting are set to high quality.

In regards to hp heating problem, I strongly beleive it's not limited to the video card issue. I remember that a few moths back I could not place my hands over the keyboard or use the mouse pad because of the heating problem.

Some work arounds helps you to ease this problem. Right now my CPU is running at 48c and the HDD 44c, but I use Rmclock for undervolting and a Cooling pad that significantly reduce the heat in the HDD and memory areas (the memory ram area gets so hot that you can't place your hands on the mouse pad that is right over it).

So this is an issue that goes beyond the fact that nvidia cards have problems.

I have my dv2500t with 8400 GS fried. It happened next day after my warranty expired but HP cs allowed me to extend the warranty. It is now gone for repairs.

    this is somewhat ironic

    i have a dv6000z series running on a turion 64 x2 tl-60, nvidia 8400m gs 256 mb, and my temps are normal.

cpu - 45 idle, and 55 when playing some games
gpu - 46 idle, and 62 when playing.

i'm not using cooling pads, or undervolting.
And it is well known that turions run hotter than core2duos, and some people i know that is experiencing this problem have intel processors.
I bought my laptop 2 months agos.

Maybe is some bios related issue.

my 8400m is at 55C while sitting on a bed with the fan sticking over the corner. My graphics card has reached temperatures over 100C before i got my laptop back from repair and the fan connector was in there half way allowing it to boot up but the fan power pin wasent touching just the reading one. I hope they replace the graphics cards with ati cards similar to what they did in the zd7000 serries. Or maybe a dv5z serries =D

How do I monitor the temperature of my 8400M GS? Also, are the GPU problems being caused by high temperatures or cycling between off and normal temps?

Is the risk of failure lower if you don’t game, which would be cycling between normal temps and off as opposed to high temps and off?

Yea, risk of failure should be lower, as the GPU wont be strained as much and thus wont get as hot.

Boy I am glad that the last notebook I purchased I went with the IGP instead of an nVidia discrete 8400M GS. Even though I wasn't gettin' great graphics performance (don't need it anyway - have a powerhouse desktop system), I didn't have to worry about this nVidia mess up. I hope they can get it resolved quickly for all the users out there with this issue.
