Hi everyone, I just got Omen 17-an100 CTO laptop with i7-8750h, gtx1070, 16gb ram, and 128 gb ssd. I love it. It is a big upgrade from my dell inspiron 17 and everything ran great. While GPU temp is acceptable, max out at around 62, CPU temp is way too high: 50-60 Celsius idle and reach up to 100 under load. My room temperature is 21 degree Celsius or 70 F.
While there is no problem so far, the temp is significant higher than my old laptop. From what I read it is a common temp for this laptop out of the box.
I also run speedfan app and notice that while fan 1 runs normal at 2195rpm or faster depending on usage, fan 2 speed is 200-ish rpm, and never reach the thousand rpm mark (or even 300 mark). Again, I have seen this problem in discussion, but never found any solution and explanation.
I'm planning to return the laptop as the last resort, but I would love to hear if anyone can help me improve the CPU temp, or confirm that it can be done for this laptop. I have read about thermal paste, undervolt, and disable turbo boost max, but there seems to be not much improvement for this particular model.

The Intel i7-8750h is known to get very hot because its a 6 core CPU. With turboboost on it can reach up to 4.1 GHz with 1 core and 3.9GHZ with all 6 cores and thats why it can easily reach to temps up to 100C, Also HP laptops are known to have bad cooling systems so im not surprised. I suggest you to try to undervolt it before doing anything.

Disabling turboboost would help with the temps greatly but your CPU will only reach to 2.2GHz base clocks which kinda kills the purpose of having a powerful CPU like that and repasting the CPU and GPU with better thermal paste would require for you to disassemble your laptop if you're comfortable of doing that but it'll help as well. If all else fails you can return it within 30 days -
thank you for replying. Yes, I can confirm that without turboboost, the i7 ran a lot cooler, maxed out at 60-70 degree Celsius, but the performance decreased significantly in all the tests and games.
I also tried to undervolt using throttlestop, setting -130mv, but CPU temp is still reaching up to 90-ish under heavy load. Would anyone have any tip? -
Sucks to hear..
Did you try to update to the latest BIOS for your system? After doing some digging around i found that the latest BIOS F.05 Rev.A for the Omens will help improve system stability including improving the temps of your system

If that still dont help then just return it. -
I have the Omen 17 an104nf, same CPU but with a gtx 1060. Bios F05.
Undervolt set to -170mv for core and cache.
With room temperature at 24°C, after like 1 hour idle temps are 36°C for CPU and 40°C for GPU.
If I run Unigine Heaven, CPU reaches 72°C and GPU 65°C.
I do have the option "fan always on" enabled in Bios. It only activates the CPU fan on idle, not the GPU fan.
Also I noticed the CPU fan is always spinning faster and louder than the GPU fan, in every situation.
Speedfan also gives low values for my fan2 but it's not reliable.
I repasted (took a while...) and the temperatures are approximately the same for both CPU and GPU (I used Noctua NTH1).
Your CPU temps are indeed very high. What also surprises me is that your gtx 1070 runs cooler than my 1060, although it should be the other way around.
CPU and GPU are very close on the the motherboard and share heatpipes. Just an assumption here, but there might be a contact issue between your CPU an the pipes, that would also explain why your GPU stays fresh.Last edited: Sep 18, 2018 -
. Thank you for sharing your experience, 3uphrates. In the future, I'd like to try to enable "fan always on" in the bios and do my thermal paste. Setting undervolt to -170m, however, is too low for my machine. Using Throttlestop 7.80, I found that by setting turbo boost power max to 30W (instead of default 45W), together with undervolt -129.9mv for both core and cache, CPU temperature decreases even more.
In cinebench, my CPU maxed out at 85°C, while still gave me a score of 1168 cb compared to 1221 before. My idle temp now for CPU and GPU are 45°C and 44°C respectively, and doing basic task like web browsing, typing, opening windows bring the CPU temp to around 52°C. Running Unigine Heaven, my scores are very close compared to before (2007 compared to 2033). My CPU reached 81°C, while GPU 66°C.
1070 runs very cool in this laptop indeed. While undervolt supposed to increase performance, my machine experienced a slight decrease in performance, but a huge improvement in temperature. Maybe it has something to do with lowering the turbo boost max. On the other hand, I'm not quite sure about what to set for the turbo boost short power max, and leave it at default 78w. If anyone has any idea what to do with these settings, please let me know. -

Perhaps with better thermal paste and future HP updates can help with temps even more, but I'm still not so sure if I should keep the laptop or not, since there is not many laptop with GTX1070 and i7 8750h have better temps. -
Those temps are much better than what you was getting before and its hard to get better temps than that with the undervolt + better thermal paste on that CPU. Like i said before HP laptops are known to have bad cooling systems and also there are many complaints about that CPU in other laptop brands as well. If you're going to return it you only have 30 days from the day you've received it.
EDIT: Tbh selling a 6 core CPU in a $1000+ price is bad idea especially when most people dont know anything about Undervolting and changing the thermal paste like usLast edited: Sep 19, 2018 -

Good call. I still dont think any laptop can handle the full clock speed of that CPU. Like i said there are many complaints about the i7-8750H on this forum and other places as well, remember its a new CPU.Then again you really dont need the full clock speed of the i7-8750H when it comes to games as most games are GPU dependent and with the 1070GTX you can run every game on 1080p max settings and still get 60+ FPS with some exceptions ofc. I have turboboost disabled on Balanced Power Settings on my system and i have it enabled when i use high performance and i only use it for converting videos.
