I have been through 3 laptops in the past year and currently compac is the worst and HP has been the best so I am again on the market for a new HP laptop. I haven't been keeping up as much as I could be currently so what are some basic to mid level laptops that are currently a good buy?

Obviously the HP Pavilions, since there's not much of a choice - it's not like HP has a huge selection of low to mid range machines.

You do know that HP owns Compaq right?

The dv5t is a pretty popular choice on on this board. I myself am biased because I own one and it's been great so far. It runs a little warm, but that really depends on the configuration. It's pretty easy to get a really good deal since HP seems to have a new coupon out every week. There's actually a 30% off coupon right now, so take advantage of that while you can.
