3RVX is a great alternative for a OSD for volume.

Second this. I use it, it uses about 5MB of ram, not bad for our modern systems with all the RAM to go around. I find it works better than HP's stuff. If you've installed HP's stuff make sure to remove it so it doesn't conflict with 3RVX's sounds.

I also use 3RVX. Love the win+mouse scroll up and down for volume changes.

Another Alternative is Microsoft's keyboard driver. It has a nice OSD that works with the quicktouch volume keys. I use it an all my HP notebooks. Doesn't interfere with games like HP's OSD can and uses a small footprint of 500MB-1.5MB. Pops up when you change volume or mute/unmute.

Select Keyboard, then select Digital Media keyboard 3000, then your OS version and language. Download and install.

Doesn't interfere with your keyboard controls or external keyboards.

Been using this for 2 years without issue.

Reinstall HP Quick Launch Buttons. You might as well need to reinstall Media Smart software to get it work.. not sure, but give it a go.
