I was looking on getting a Sony VAIO or a dell, but when I went o best buy, they had this great deal on a HP ZE5570US which has:
    Pentium 4-M 2.66Ghz
    60 GB Hard drive
64MB DDR SDRAM Ati Radeon 4x AGP and 3D Architecture
    512MB memory
    DVD-ROM/CD/RW
    wireless lan

This config is pretty much what I am looking for in a laptop. And the price is believe it or not below a 1000 dollars after all the rebates. The only thing stopping me from getting it is that, it's an HP. I've never owned an HP PC/notebook before so I dont know their quality. I would like to know your opinion on HP laptops and for this model too. Thanks!

HP is most definitely a reputable notebook computer maker, they're actually number one in the world for most laptops sold last year so they have to be doing something right! That deal sounds sweet, I'd go with an HP before a VAIO to be honest because there's generally less quality issues with HP notebooks. It's likely this HP model is a little older and that's why you're getting such a good deal with the rebates, but who really cares if it's a older notebook if the specs are right? BestBuy offers a service package too, it's worth listening about but if they charge a lot for it and you're only spending $1000 on the laptop then skip paying $300 for a service contract you may never use.

    I agree with abaxter

I have a hp desktop for 5-6 years that i've neglected the heck out of[ :D] and it runs super well. It's never really crashed on me and i haven't had to change any of the components either.
I've had a hp zd7000 laptop for about a month and I've heard good things about them, however Compaq (which is a HP company) I've heard mostly negative things about their laptops

I got my laptop from Best Buy it cost $2300 and I payed $250 for the service plan. If yours is under $1500 you'll pay less but I'm not sure how much (probably between $150-$200)

Thanks for your posts! [:I] I just might stop by at Best Buy tonight to buy it. I am hoping they still have it on stock. [ :)]

I bought the HP Pavilion ze5500 a week ago. So far I havent really encountered any major problems withit. It's fast, the resolution seems to be alright. (Much better than my friend's notebook who had a Dell 5100) May be its because this notebook has a 64MB video card as opposed to his 32MB? I was lucky enough to purchase this notebook from Best Buy for about $1,099 and it came with a $250 mail-in rebate. [ :)] All in all, after the mail in rebate, it'll be about $849, a very sweet deal for a Pentium 4. So this model may not be the top of the line model, but for the price I certainly couldnt resist. [ :D]

    Pros:
-The integrated wireless is great. I have a home network and it was able to sense my network immediately. Hooking it up too was a breeze.
    -The resolution is good.
-The 60GB Hard drive is more than what I need.
-The DVDs I tested it with came out nice and clear.
-There are also buttons to adjust the volume
-I like the button that enables you to turn off the touchpad which is really handy when typing.
-It's got hot keys for one touch access to your emails, internet
-You can hook it up on a TV, but i havent tried it yet.
    - Awesome specs for the price. I really think I got more than what I paid for.[8D]
    Cons:
So far there are only two things I'm not fond off:
-It's a little bit heavy. Weight is about 7.5 pounds then again I guess for a Pentium 4 thats loaded you really have to sacrifice weight. It seems heavier though so if youre going to be traveling a lot, you might want to consider a lighter one.
    - This laptop can improve on the quality of videos. Sometimes streaming videos appear "pixelated". I am not sure if it's my internet connection, (which I doubt since I have cable) but videos dont appear quite as nice as compared to Sony VAIO which was the other brand I was considering.

Overall though, for the price it's really worth it. I mean $850 is not a bad deal for a 15" Pentium 4 2.66Ghz, 60GB hard drive, 512 MB, DVD-ROM/CD-RW.

One weird thing though, I browsed around and window shopped at other retailers before buying this one and the retail is still anywhere between $1300-1500. Even at other Best Buy, they got different pricing. Online this notebook cost 1599. I am not sure what the deal is with Best Buy with the different pricing. You would think that the prices would be same althroughout. But I'm just thankful that I found this deal. :)

This sounds like what I need for a laptop - may I ask what best buy you got it at ?

I had checked out three Best Buys, all in the Suburbs of IL. The Best Buy I had checked out were Best Buy in Bloomindale, IL, the Best Buy in Downers Grove, IL, and the Best Buy in Aurora, IL. Online this model sells for about 1500 the last time I checked. In both the Bloomindale and Aurora Best Buy, it varies anywhere between $1350-1599.00 The best one was the Best Buy Oakbrook where I got the laptop from. Like what I had written previsouly I have no idea what's up with the different pricing scheme. By the way, the notebook, even though it's priced for about $850 after the rebates is BRAND NEW, it is not open box nor display. So I suggest you look around first before you buy if youre going to purchase at Best Buy because sometimes they have different pricing.

By the way, on Ebay this model sells for about $1000 just in case you want to check it out.

    Hope this helps!

That was the model I was going to get before I decided on the zd7000. It looked great to me and I really (even still) thought it was the best bang for your dollar. Also take a look at buying it at hpshopping.com. They have free shipping on most their models, and the part I liked the most was the tax free thing unless you are unlucky enough to live in CA or TN.

I recently gave up my modding ways and baught a laptop..
    HP zd7000 (says zd7040us)?
    anywho 2.8 Ghz 512 DDR Gforce5600 17"
    yadda yadda..
I have to admit I am impressed..
I did mod it though.. added rubber feet to raise the fan side 1/4 "
    [8D]
Being as once upon a time I was A Best Buys Tech Bench guy ( ya yaI know) HP is without spending a fortune (1750 for this one)
Hands down the best I have seen.. we had very few problems with them
    out of all the manufacturers.
I have already tortured this one and its running fine.
I would say you are deff not going wrong with a HP.. there are many good laptops out there.. HP is deff a top runner.

That's good to hear. [:I] Coz quite honestly I was having doubts about HP as a good brand for notebooks before I decided to buy my laptop. Everyone I asked kept telling me to go for a Dell. I woulddve have, if the prices for Dell were not that high...! But a Pentium 4 laptop for about $800 is definitely something hard to resist. So add the fact that HP is also as reputable is indeed a bonus! [8D]

It's amazing what a commerical with a guy saying "Dude, we're getting a Dell" can do for sales and credibility. Hehe, I wsa getting a Dell until I did my extensive reasearch and ended up with HP.
