    I've been looking around for a notebook, and as of two days ago I was sure I would buy the Dell e1405 when prices came down again. But then today I saw an ad in the paper for an "HP dv1660SE" at Best Buy for $949. I went to check it out and liked it, but did a little more research on the Web when I got home.

    This was the last day of GA's no-tax deal on computers, so I wanted to get something. So tonight I bought this configuration for $938 (no tax, free shipping):

    HP Pavilion dv2000t customizable Notebook PC

    * Genuine Windows XP Home Edition
    * Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2250 (1.73 GHz)
    * 14.1" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    * Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 950
    * FREE Upgrade to 1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x512MB)!!
    * FREE Upgrade from 60 GB 5400 RPM to 80 GB 5400 RPM
    * Super Multi 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
    * Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
    * 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    * Microsoft(R) Works/Money
    * HP IMPRINT Finish + Microphone
    * HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

    (I'm not a gamer, and I get free XP Pro and MS Office through my work.)

    I'm still afraid that I could have done better, but I couldn't get the e1405 under about $1200 spec'd the way I wanted it, and I would have ended up paying tax and shipping. (That might have been with the 1.83 Duo chip and a 120MB HD, though.)

    Also, what is the difference between a dv1660SE and a dv2000t, since all the parts can be ordered the same except for 0.1" on the screen size? I thought the 1660se's keyboard felt a little cheap, so I'm hoping the 2000t will have a better build.

    Finally, what people recommend getting re: a warranty?

    I'd appreciate any and all feedback.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    You got yourself a very nice machine!

    The dv1660 is based on the dv1000, which is the older model. It's since been replaced by the dv2000, which is completely redesigned, and looks MUCH nicer!

    Not familiar with the dv1660SE specifically, so I don't know if it had/has a duo core.

    The laptop you are getting is a sweet machine! Not for playing the latest games, but it will be very fast for most other tasks, such as Word, Internet, watching DVD's, Photoshop, etc.

    You won't be disappointed!

    Thanks, Shel.

    The 1660 specs were identical except for the tiny difference in screen size, and the 1660 had a T2300 (1.66 MHz).

    For a while I thought the 1660 was based on the 2000 because they put the same glossy/sparkly cover on it, but then I noticed the different keyboard. Glad to hear I got the newer one.

    The differences between the two notebooks are the processors; The T2300 has an FSB of 667, so it allows you to run a faster memory speed while the T2250 has an FSB of 533. Not really a big deal as the speeds arent that close.
