Hi, I was turning on my computer in class the other day with the usual routine of listening to the optical disk whirring for a few seconds and also getting a few heads to turn and stare at me in confusion. I was wondering if there was any way that you can disable the optical drive or not make it initialize at startup so I can stop this horrid sound every time I start my computer. I rarely even use the optical drive probably once since I got the computer and that was to make recovery disks.

A bit extreme no? There should be no insane noise coming out of there anyway. I suggest to get it fixed under warranty or let them ship you a new computer. Keep it simple and know your rights. ;)

Different CD drives make different amounts of noise. For example, the drive that comes with my Envy 17 is very quiet. The Panasonic BD burner I've replaced it with makes audible noise at startup, however. No drive should be as loud as I imagine yours must be, though. It's probably defective. How long does the sound last? Which Envy model do you have?

If you cannot bear being without your computer, I recommend swapping the drive out for another one on your own. The service manual makes it rather easy. DVD burners can be found cheaply on eBay.

Happens on my E14 and my GF's old macbook. Kind of annoying, but not a huge deal. I wish it could be disabled through Windows/BIOS though, but afaik it cant

depending on how often you use the drive, you could disable under device manager and only enable it when you need it

Mine makes rather loud clunky/clicky noise when inserting / ejecting a disk. My buddy's too, so I guess it's normal.

I have the 1010nr model. It's probably as loud as someones regular speaking voice.

I tried disabling it under device manager but it still makes the noise.

I also have this exact same issue and it's annoying. Were you able to find a way to fix it or send the computer back for a fix?

It's not an issue. It's the design of the drive itself, all slot loads do this.

Nope, based off the comments people were making I figured it was just something that all Envys did. The first Envy I had also did it, but I didn't think anything of it at that time.
