    Hi all,

I recently ordered a dv5000z but didn't check the option for the "Genuine Windows XP Home Edition Backup CD". I decided that I did want to get one after I had already ordered the notebook so I could format my computer, but trying to do this was a nightmare!! I called hp customer support and I kept getting transferred around to all these different departments, none of which even seemed to actually know what I was talking about. The email support thought I wanted a recovery disk. I don't think they understood that I just wanted the XP backup CD. At one point I was told by a woman on the phone in India that the dv5000z computer didn't even exist!!! Anyway, does anyone know how I could actually get one of these? Or any other options?

    Thanks

I called HP the other day to order one and they told me NO because my dv5000z came with a recovery partition and I could burn my own recovery dvds with the system recovery thing that comes with the laptop.

Will this allow you to format the notebook though?

Should just don't format the D drive(recovery partition). I think the recovery disks that you can burn have all the files you need to reinstall windows and drivers but i am not sure.

The recovery partion bascially tells you to burn either DVD's or a whole bunch of CD-R's with the bloatware on those CD's. My friend and some other members on this forum have been able to order the CD since they dont have a DVD burner.

I feel your pain, only mine is with the recovery discs i am trying to get from Hp for the newer DV8000 with the go 7600. Been trying for 2 weeks and they were suppose to call me back 2 days ago to tell me when they would be available, and they have previously sent me 2 of the wrong cd's one being Media Center Edition, which i never even got with my Notebook, and then they send me a whole new Xp homeinstall disc.... Those people in India are incompitent.... im sorry.

O ya, dont use their tech support online, its just as bad as calling them most of the time, and it randomly disconnects you if the rep goes idle for a short period of time.

Yeah, it seems like it wouldn't be that hard to order a $10 disk, but that's customer support for you. I was wondering: I have an old windows XP disk that came with a Dell Desktop computer (Dimension 8200) that was bought about 4 years ago. The cardboard holder that the disk is in says for use only with Dell computers, but could I possibly use this disk to format? It wouldn't have any updates on it so I'd probably have to download those. It was before Service Pack 2 or any of the windows updates came out, but from what I can tell, the only way to really format my new dv5000z would have been to order the XP backup disk (which I mistakenly didn't do). Thanks for the help.

You wouldnt beable to use that disk. Its got certain drivers i believe that pertain to the components inside the laptop, but im not for sure on that.

I too meant to order the OS cd when I placed my order. I had to receive my notebook first before they would or could send me the CDs. HP Shopping said I had to get them from tech support and my serial number wasn't in the system yet. I'll try again tomorrow. If not I'll just return this notebook and buy another. What a waste.
