Been looking around for certain programs to boost my system performance, as well as snooping for tips or other information about unlocking the BIOS. I was able to find a program that was compatible with the Mobility HD 5850 on the 17 3D and overclock it a good bit. I'm able to run World of Warcraft on Ultra settings at about 80-100 FPS after overclocking... so its a pretty good gain.
I've been searching for a few programs to overclock the i7-840QM, but I've had no luck. I've not been able to find anything about a successful (or even unsuccessful) overclock of the Envy 17 or 17 3D.
I've downloaded a few programs but their either not compatible with the i7, not able to be used because of HP's locked BIOS, or require registration or custom modified pll's (like SetFSB).
Obviously because HP locks the BIOS settings you can't overclock from the BIOS. And so far (as far as I know) no one has been able to crack, unlock, or make custom BIOS for the Envy 17/ 17 3D. Or at least posted about it online. So the overclocking has to be software based. I know software based OCing isn't as stable or well looking upon as BIOS overclocking, but when you have a locked BIOS you gotta work with what you got.
So has anyone been able to overclock your Envy 17/ 17 3D's i7-840QM? And if so, what programs did you use?

I would so love to know since I have the Envy 17 3D i7-840.....and I upgraded to the 8gig ram...and I thought it would scream through gaming..but not so. on Battlefield Bad Compnay 2 I put everything on high even the HOAB, but not the vert sync. i got around 22-30 fps

Lol, I am rooting for this guy,as we all should. I do hope he or someone can really solve this HP lockdown nonsense.

I started an "Overclocking the 5850" thread a while back. The conclusion we arrived at was this: The Envy's BIOS locks the 5850 to .9v, making overclocking impossible. In fact, it is underclocked by a fairly healthy amount, most likely due to heat issues. If you somehow found a way to overclock it, we'd love to know.
Also, I really don't see a way to overclock outside of using setfsb and getting lucky. One guy here actually was able to overclock the i5-450m in his Envy 14 by getting the right PLL, but I haven't had any luck with mine. As long as HP keeps locking their BIOS, then we can't really do anything via that route. -
That is what it sounds like since the motherboard BIOS limits its speed? Am I wrong here, sorry for not being a computer techie, lol.
but it is interesting of course...

Anxiously awaiting his response. I've been meaning to fool around with the Radeon Bios Editor, which I believe may be how he did it.

Bumpity bump bump...

Than again, maybe I'm just wishful thinking, lol

I may not return my Envy 17 3d, in all likelihood I will just sell it on ebay and make a profit and then buy an SB Envy 17 3d later.

HP's CoolSense cooling solution should help as well. I have to admit though, I don't really know much about it.

LOL, sorry, I couldn't resist. HAHAHAH
