This is probably a dumb question so I apologize in advance. I'm kind of new to this whole computer scene. I think that the m11x has made overclocking the processor possible and easy to do, but have also read that overclocking on laptops is generally a bad idea due to the increased heat?
Has anyone ever tried overclocking the CPU (or GPU) in an HP Envy 15/17? Would this be recommended at all? Thanks.

on the Envy you can overclock quite a bit on the 5830 version, not quite as much on the GEN 1 4830 but still accomplish quite a bit. 3dmark06 on the 4830 can jump from around 7050 on up to about 9300 or better. On the 5830, i've seen reports in the 10k's.
You want to monitor temps, use an external cooler, and be aware of your ambient i.e. room temps. While the cpu and gpu are designed to throttle down or even shut down if temps get too high, there are lots of other little bits in the computer that suffer ill effects from high heat, so best to try and keep your temps down. With MSI Afterburner you can monitor what's going on as well as change the fan stepping profile for the gpu to get more fan sooner which will help keep temps down. AMD GPU clock tool will let you clock the gpu. I'm not aware of anyone overclocking the cpu. I have the i720 in mine and it has no problem keeping up with the gpu.
As to whether to overclock or not, the question is what is it you want to do that you can't do with stock gpu clocks? You can find a safe overclock then run the game or app in question and see if you can really notice a difference from your stock clock settings. If so, then overclocking is probably worthwhile. If not, what's the point? Truth be told "in the real world" most peeps I know who o'clock lappies, do it to run their benchmarks at the highest possible scores for *bragging rights*..then promptly return to stock clocks for real workhehehe. AND, a *substantial* number actually spend a lot of time trying to UNDERCLOCK their boxxes so as to get more bat life. You don't need gaming quality cpus and gpus for surfing or sending email
good luck, go slow and incrementally, and monitor your temps. Have fun.
It something goes wrong, blame it on George Bush, seems to be the *IN* thing to do lately. <wink>
