I have an HP zv6170ca (AMD ath64 3800+ 1GB ram ATI radeon xpress x200 128mb dedicated) and I have a continuous problem of lock-ups and overheats while running aything from media player to winamp to Dawn of War. The computer will function for a few minutes then the fans will go to the max RPM, the computer locks, accepting no further input and continuing a still image of the output at the time of lock. I have spoken with HP on several occassions about this and they have only told me to reinstall windows. I do not want to re-format and have already removed background applications, reinstalled cpu and graphics drivers yet the problem persists. The problem occurs much less often when on battery power. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to either re-map the power scheme for battery power to when the computer is on AC power or if there is a better solution to this problem. Any suggestions are appreciated.

You could try undervolting. That would dramatically reduce power consumption when the CPU is under load. CrystalCPUID and RMClock are two of the more popular power management programs. You can probably reduce the core voltage at full speed by 0.2V or nearly that. Remember to set your Power Scheme to Always On first.

My Athlong 64 3500+ undervolted very well and mobilemeter rarely shows temps above 40 (x5 at 0,875v!). I highly recommend that you undervolt it, search the big undervolting thread here in HP forum.

Other than that, make sure your power scheme is set to portable/laptop. (controlpane>power options). Monitor the load on the CPU, it should be minimal for winamp and browsing.

How long has this been happening? Because it shouldn't. You should not be forced to under volt your processor to use your laptop
