I have the V2000 compaq presario series.

I've had it for about 1.5 years now.

This is, I recently installed windows XP on it and the computer seems to be overheating.

When I watch videos on youtube, my cpu fan turns on, and I'm pretty sure this never happened during my previous installation.

Sometimes it gets so bad that I get really weird patterns on the LCD screen and eventually, the entire system hangs and I'd have to shut the computer off

anyone have this issue, or perhaps I have to vacuum the dust out of the laptop?

Sounds like the GPU is overheating. Which GPU do you have? And CPU for that matter.

Hmm... you recently installed WinXP... did you install the AMD processor driver afterwards? If not, CPU power management isn't enabled. Your notebook still shouldn't crash but if there is a heat problem, enabling power management will help. You'll also need to set your Power Scheme to Portable/Laptop.

1.69GHz (we'll call it 1.7GHz) isn't right, that generation of Turions is 1.6GHz, 1.8GHz, etc. in 200Mhz increments. See what CPU-Z says your speed is, before and after you install the processor driver if that driver isn't installed already.

CPUZ says AMD Turion 64 ML-2

    core speed is 797.7 Mhz
    Multiplier x4
    bus speed 200

um. can you point me to the right AMD driver if it's not too much trouble

    thanks!

You've already got it, it appears, since your notebook is idling at 800MHz like it should. So, false alarm there, though if you don't have the current version you can get it from the HP downloads page for your notebook or directly from AMD here. WinXP doesn't always read the CPU speed correctly but CPUZ does.

I assume you already have the current ATI video drivers from hp.com? The ones from ati.com probably won't work correctly.
