Andrew told me Thursday or Friday (I submitted it over last weekend)...his exact words were 'probably Thursday.' Unfortunately, publishing the review takes times because they have to move the word document over to HTML, proofread it a little, then host the pictures, link to the pics, etc, etc...and they have like 20 reviews going on at once! Somehow I wonder how they can do it at all!

But, if you want a preview of it (it isn't entirely published so we haven't posted it yet):

I don't have any other 15.4" notebooks (well, I don't have any 15.4" ones anymore)...but several pics in the review have the 15.4" nc8430 placed right next to the 17".

didnt see you post before. Nice review. That screen seems really nice, a bit disappointed about the weight though.

amazing value. although personally that review confirm for me that the more compact 8510P is better for me.

    Outstanding work.

7.7lbs is about the lightest you'll ever see on a 17" notebook

it's advertised at 7.4 though, or 7.3. Cant remember. Macbook pro is 6.8 according to apple.

    Is 7.7 including power brick?

Bulk is still my main concern. But im a bit disappointed that HP underestimated the weight. False advertising annoys me. And i dont see how HP can get around this one since the 8 cell is standard on all the models, so they cant simply say the 7.3 is with a smaller battery. Unless the weight is wieght of the notebook without battery attached-which annoys me too!? I think dell does that. the Vostro 1500 is about 6 pounds according to dell. hahaha

Oh yeh. love the shot of the 8710p with the keyboard removed. how awsome would it be if you could swap in a 8800m

    Hi, Greg..

Nice review, agree with most of your view,
btw, Noted about the HDD test, thought the optional HDD you purchased is of Seagate not Hitachi? the photo attached shows ST series?

    Thanks fro the preview!

I don't think that HP is trying to mislead people anyway. However, their site is a full mess from time to time.

    Not exactly...

    Hi, All

the presented 32 or 64bits selection option, is there anyway to call this option back (wonder if this ever gets backup with the disk set..) as backup only provide c drive backup only. while believe most option resides in D or E: drive??

selected 32 now wish would have selected 64 since my backup disk comes with only 32bit cd..

Please do upload. I don't think I have the same problem (I don't really see ANY problem with my bezel), but I want to be sure I'm clear on what I'm looking for.

I can try, but you'll have to wait three weeks until my Thanksgiving break. I can't afford computer downtime to "break" my OS even for a hour or two...

What memory did you get for your 8710p? Exactly. I am considering replacing 1 or 2 of my 1GB sticks. Is it better to replace both?

    Hi, Been away,
here is the photo about the monitor frame i meant, as you can see the frame to the center is showing fine but the edge is showing the exposed metal frame. (non of my laptops is showing this before.)

hope this is normal, but personally don't think so..

I have an HP branded 2GB stick that came with the notebook, and I bought this 2GB stick as well:
    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820208323

Sadly, the price has fallen by an additional $20 compared to what I paid for...but oh well!

But yeah, I haven't had a single problem with that stick so I'm happy.

I'd say something looks a little misaligned. I can see the same metal 'sub-frame' on mine, but I do not think it is visible until a much higher vertical viewing angle. Does the upper part of the bezel show the same 'problem', or does it look normal from a similar angle?

Seeing from your review is your unit comes with Samsu** RAM, so are mine, but the memory module is somewhat different.. any issue with mixing different brand? anyone tried..

Yeah.. it seems off as well for the upper part, making the lid latch abit off, can feels it gets stuck in the middle somehow. thinking of re-tighten a bit.. but worry of the screw rubber seals. any advice how to pull it off..

only around 4 corners, mid section looks fine..

    Thanks!

    2 possibilities:
    i) The antenna wires under the bezel are not tucked in properly, so the bezel can't be locked in place.
ii) The bezel's sticky tape is missing/not sticky enough.

The bezel construction actually has a thin strip of double sided tape beneath it. It helps to stick the bezel to the screen's frame before it's screwed in. Underneath this bezel are antenna wires which are routed along the sides of the screen. If they aren't routed nicely, the bezel might not fit in place. it looks like that could be your problem.

You can remove the bezel by removing the 4 screws and prying it out. However, you might damage the thin bezel if you're not careful. I'd suggest getting an HP tech to look at it.

    Hi, Chrixx,

missed out on your post, (this thread has not been active for a while :)) thanks for the tips. try not going back to HP support (in fact quite sad with them for not allowing me to return this prod.. local policy!) they take good 6 days for a keyboard change! and have to call every day to make them deliver only to missed thing one after another.. enough on that,

how risky is to DIY that? about the screw cover (rubber like thing, could it be put back?). been referencing on the maintenance manual. but quite reluctant to DIY. also now the opening latch, seems not very smooth as pointed out by Greg.. think sooner or later have to do it. :(

My 8710p some times can't to boot
I've problem with black screen on my 8710P. Assuming that the issue is in graphics card driver (nVidia Quadro NVS 320M, ver. 167.58 , vista x64 Ultimate SP1.....
HDD stops just before vista logo should appear and OS does not start. I mean, I can see the progress bar with the green and black lines going from one side to the other, but at some point, the screen goes black, stays black, hdd stops and I have to turn it off manually and switch it on again.

Does it happen all the time?? or from time to time?? I would suspect the HDD problems not the graphic card problem. Run a full test on the Hard Drive and report back.

I mean, I can see the progress bar with the green and black lines going from one side to the other, but at some point, the screen goes black, stays black, hdd stops and I have to turn it off manually and switch it on again. Then, two options appears: recovery and normal start. I have tested the two of them but my 8710w goes on failing this way randomly. For example, four good starts and one wrong from time to time. I do not think this is normal because I have just bought the laptop.
If somebody have an opinion or solution I would really appreciate. Many thanks.

I had exactly the same problem.
The NVidia Graphics Driver 156.31 caused the problem. I uninstalled the driver and installed the older driver 101.63 (sp36309.exe).
    Problem solved!

    Thank you Andreas.

I was just testing if this problem would go on after reinstalling the OS. I have realized that the problem will go on if I install a Windows Update package about NVidia Quadro FX 1600M.
So, the same problem as you, suppose.
Now I have driver version 7.15.11.163 for this graphics controller (the older one) and it seems not to fail.
First problem I have with updates. Grrrr...

    Thanks again.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with 8710P. Assuming that the issue is in graphics card driver (nVidia Quadro NVS 320M, ver. 167.58 whql, vista x64 business), is there anything we can do to urge HP (or Microsoft) to work on a solution using a more up-to-date driver so that we do not have to revert to an old driver?

I have the same problem with the 8510w. Quadro 570M. Sometimes windows dont load welcome screen and give me blank screen.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I asked HP to do something to tell Microsoft of Nvidia about the problem and they tell me they could not do anything.
    Unfair.

By 'upgrade the driver' I didnt mean windows update. This is not a place to update the drivers.
Go to nvidia's website, find the newest driver for your gfx, get driver cleaner, clean up all the mess with drivers, install the new one and test.
Reinstalling OS just changes the windows files and registry so wont help. Possibly a CLEAN install of windows would be a good idea but as a last resort if driver cleaner didnt work. With the clean install you would again use the newest driver from nvidia, not HP.

And BTW. have YOU read that properly??
Anyway, test the newer driver first, then the older one.

i dont get that then. other users reported no problems with older driver. Frankly speaking, never heard about 8510p having problem booting like yours. Have you had the same problem when you got the computer?
Anyway, I think you need to count on HP regarding this issue. Same as theyve been sorting out us - 8510p owners with BIOS updates.
