Why do people hate the 4200rpm PATA on the Mini 1000 so much? Is there a noticeable difference in performance against the 5400 rpm 160gig hdd on other netbooks like the Aspire One?

Yes... 4200RPM is very doggy compared to 5400RPM. It's definitely noticeable when it comes to boot times.
