    Good day to all Pavilions Windows gurus...

    I have a serious problem for which I have very little knowledge.

    After performing a repair on Acrobat Professional, the installer kicked in a reboot.

    Inadvertently, the recovery DVD that I created last week was in the drive when the machine was rebooted.

    At boot, the machine displayed a message "Windows is loading files..." and then popped a window which said "Recovery Partition Creation... Please do not unplug AC power or turn off the machine until the process is completed."

    NOTE THAT THERE WAS NEVER ANY WARNING THAT THE MACHINE WAS ABOUT TO SELF DESTRUCT AND THAT I SHOULD TAKE A BACKUP... THERE WAS SIMPLY NO PROMPT OR NO WARNING TO PREVENT THIS MESS FROM HAPPENING... God, I love HP at this very moment!

    This is when I realized that the DVD was in the reader and that something pretty drastic was in progress.

    When the machine finally rebooted, it came back with "Missing Operating system".

    I have tried to read the disk from another machine... it seems that the process created one partition of 40GB, another one of 400 MB and the rest (149GB) unallocated. But, even that seems unreadable.

    I have not written anything on the disk and I have actually taken it out to replace it with a brand new disk (1. to try to save the original disk for a disk recovery company which may be able to read the disk somehow) and 2. to try to re-install the machine so that I can get back on my feet).

    =========================================

    Now that the preamble is done, I have two questions:

    1. Does anyone know what the recovery partition creation do? Does it reformat the disk or only wipe the FAT table (or whatever it's called for NTFS). If it only erased the table, I may be able to get a specialized recovery company to save my data. If it erased everything, it is not worth spending thousands of dollars trying to recover anything.

    2. If I have created the recovery CD and I use it to re-install on a brand new HD, am I missing anything to perform this recovery? At this moment, even though the PC boots from the DVD, it seems to stall on a DOS-like window, sitting at the X:\windows\system32 prompt.

    Needless to say that I do not have a recent backup and that I am somewhat desperate to recover my data and to recover/re-install my notebook.

    As you can see, I am in serious need for help and expertise for anyone with expertise in this kind of mess.

    Please help.

    As far as recoverin data is concerned, it may or may not be overwritten by the restoration. So, there still is a chance some of it might still be recoverable. I dont exacty know what type of format HP does with the newer systems but if it was quick format, then it might just be a case of deleting the MFT.

    If the new HDD is in working condition, then the recovery disc shouldnt have any problems. Unless the recovery discs themselves are corrupt. I presume you have all the necessary DVD(2 or 3) or 1DL DVD or ~12 CD's.

    If your hard disk could not access or does not boot up then you have to use a recovery tool so that you can recover and access your all data and files. I would suggest you a recovery tool called stellar phoenix Partition Recovery Software which is quite efficient and trust worthy. This software can recover deleted, corrupted and even recover data when you accidentally delete your recycle bin. The free demo version of the software can be found on website which will show you the preview of the recovered damaged luck.
