I have a compaq presario v2000 laptop since 2003, so for 4 years now. And everything is all good, it's just lately it has been shutting off by itself.

Like if I don't use it and leave it there, it will switch over to stand-by mode, but then will automatically shuts off, this has not happen before. Usually I can leave it on all day long, and it will not turn off. Now I have to leave a small fan going next to the laptop, and when I touch the side of it, it's quite hot. So I'm guessing the battery's dying? But I'm not certain, and I don't know where or who to ask.

Can someone please help me out? If it is the battery dying, then where and how much can I buy a new battery for???

    Thanks so much.

I would greatly appreciate your help.

The heatsink could be clogged with dust, causing the laptop to overheat and force a shutdown.

HP has a battery test program that should be listed on their download page for your notebook. You're due for a new battery, once lithium ion batteries really go bad they won't last long at all. Is your notebook shutting down when it's plugged in or only while on battery?

If your notebook is shutting down and it feels very toasty, then do what brian said and try blowing away any trapped dust.

The proper way would be to disassemble the notebook. The easy way is to get a can of compressed air and blow it through the air vents. Don't overdo it, the cooling fan is delicate. You might be able to see dust around the intake and exhaust vents.

IF I do disassemble the notebook, will it be hard to assemble it back again? I can see the fan when I turned the laptop upside down.

Thanks so much for your help.
