Hey everyone,
I've been having some problems hooking up my girlfriend's dv5 to our TV. It no longer plays audio over the HDMI connection.
I mostly use VLC player to play HD content and at first it worked, with some tweaking. I had to disable and enable the audio track in VLC and then it would play through the TV. Now, it no longer works. In the audio control panel, or whatever its called (Vista), it says the HDMI device is enabled, but nothing seems to be using it.

I always install latest realtek audio driver. The stock driver doesn't support DTS/DD 5.1, only 2 channel PCM.
For your TV you only need 2 channel PCM, as most TV's won't work with bitstreaming (dts nor dolby digital). Go to HDMI device properties and select supported formats. The chipset in DV5 only supports 48kHz sampling frequency. Make sure you have checkmark next to it and click on test button to execute the test. If you can hear the sound from TV then you have a problem with software. Also disable Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG audio as your TV set is unlikely to support those. Normally this is done in video player controls but I'm not familiar with VLC. I never use VLC as it doesn't support hardware acceleration. Get a decent player like Media Player Classic that has built-in DXVA support. My favourite is KM player, but it doesn't have native DXVA support so you have to rely on external decoders like PowerDVD or Media Player Classic. There are tons of guides on how have these players setups. If you have a problem let me know. -
This is somewhat off-topic, but VLC is really not a very good video player.
I'd recommend switching to Media Player Classic Homecinema, using the CCCP pack.
Pavilion DV5 - no audio over HDMI!
