I have a hp pavilion 9075eu for a month now and i have a problem with the sound of the hard drives...it is my subjective opinion that it is quite loud (when on idle) but thats ok...what bothers me is that it makes this very annoying high-pitch or high-frequency noise (it is NOT the noise which is discussed in some other threads - which derives from cpu changing power states or something)...I read a few hdd reviews and some hard drives tend to make this kind of noise although not everyone can even hear them because of the high frequency! Does anyone else have similar experiences!? This is my first laptop and i am just wondering if this is normal?! (btw: i have 2 Seagate momentus 100gb 5400.2 drives)

Which one of the two is making the noise? Besides reseating the drives, I don't think there's much you can do

I`m quite sure it is the second disk that makes the most noise...i took it out and the noise actually was lower when only the primary disk was installed, although it wasn`t completely gone. The problem is that i bought the laptop in a foreign country and if i want to get it repaired under warranty it`s not very convenient (yes...i live in a ****ty little country in the middle of europe that doesnt even import pavilion series)...and besides i dont suppose warranty would cover this issue! Now i`m thinking about selling this drive and buying a new one - probably a samsung (i heard they are very quiet).

this is not the HDD sound its the processor sound ,it makes this sound when its idle when shifting between power states ,i have his noise too,if you read past forums you would find plenty of forums on this noise u have too choices to eliminate it,both work fine but affect batterie life so your laptop may work on bateies for less than usual so i am going to teel u the solution that is safer and less power consuming .
Go to control panel ,then System then hardware ,then click on device manager ,ten u will fnd a list of devices fo to the last one (the one called Universal serial bus controller, click on the plus sign beside it another list will appear under it go down to the last ,u will find maybe 4 or 5 icons called (USB root Hub),click on each one ,then click on power management ,then unckeck the statement that says : (Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power ),do it in all 5 usb root hubs, then click apply or ok.this should eliminate the sound but you need first to know that this will affects battery life(time available when not on c power, not battery life in general) so its batter when your are home be on AC power, but its affect on battery time is very minute.so do it and let me know if it worked for you ,cause it worked on my dv 6000 and other gateways and ell. -
I know about that processor sound and trust me - this aint it...i eliminated that squeeling cpu sound with RMClock but the HDD still persists to "whine"! I`m 100% sure it is the hdd drive because it can be heard all the time...even when in bios whereas the cpu sound can only be heard later in the win bootup process...the high frequency noise is gone only 2-3seconds before computer shuts down completely - i guess that`s about the moment when hdd shuts down!

brianstretch Notebook Virtuoso
Go get the HD diagnostics program from your HD manufacturer's website and see if it can find any problems with the drive. If so, see if the manufacturer will replace it under warranty. You can usually request a RMA from their website. If you want to do more thorough testing, you could buy SpinRite but it's $90 last I checked. It's a GREAT program though and if you ever have a corrupted drive it will usually straighten it out enough for you to transfer your data off.

Tnx for the replys guys...i`m going to try out a few diagnostic tools and hope i can figure something out, although i keep my hopes low rather than high! The thing is, i can`t remember if this squeeling was there the first time i powered up my laptop or if it started later on!

If it's a drive issue, it should show up in the SMART information. Try installed PassMark DiskCheckup ( http://www.passmark.com/products/diskcheckup.htm) or SmartMonitor ( http://www.systemsoft.com/l-2/l-3/products-smartmonitor.htm) or Active SMART ( http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Active-SMART.shtml) and looking at the values to see if your hard drives are in danger. If under Linux, install smartmontools and use smartctl

PassMark shows STATUS OK for every row...so guess nothing is wrong...i also read that in desktop computers the HDD whining noise is sometimes caused by a weak PSU...i guess that laptops dont tend to have power supply issues...is there a way to check if all the voltages are OK?!
