I'll refer you to this link.

What are the differences in these dv5000 notebooks and why are there so many?

HP offers both pre-configured as well as configurable versions of all of their laptops. So the ones they sell in retail stores(pre-configured) get model numbers depending on their configuration like dv5120, dv5140 etc...If you buy it directly from HP and choose your own options(currently AFAIK only avaible in the US), then it will be classified as a dv5000 series laptop. In the end both are the same basic laptop.

The name tags in the end of the model number indicate in which region the laptop is to be sold. US - United States, CA - Canada, AP- Asia Pcific etc..

If that is the case, then what does the name tags 'ea' and 'cl' indicate?

EA - I believe refers to Europe and , North Africa/Middle East. There are some which are unrecognisable and might be some HP internal code names.

EDIT: Oh I forgot to mention this, they also have special series for big retailers. For example Walmart gets the tag WM, there is also one for Best buy - nr I believe. They are again the same sort of classification, just in this case they are to be sold by the respective retailers.

    ^^ :hp:
I know that CA usually follows Canadian models.

The only other thing I can note is that with some of those special series for big retailers, it's important to compare ALL the specifications with other models with the same base number. Most likely, they either add or delete features or capabilities that will get the price to where they want it.
