    Hi everyone,

Hoping someone can give my some advice here.

Yesterday My brothers laptop started acting up, He told me that I plugged it into a different wall outlet, now when it boots, its doing the windows didn't shut down properly screen. However, no matter which choice you pick, eg normally, safe mode, last knowen good config etc it blue screens with an error code of Stop 0x24.

I had a hunt around and it seems to be an NTFS problem.

So, firstly I tried booting from the windows CD and running the repair install and its telling me no HDD can be detected. I managed to find the HDD self diagnostics in the bios, ran it and it all passed.

Finally I tried booting from the CD again only this time I went on as if I was going to install windows, same deal though, Windows can't detect a HDD.

I have reset the bios back to default, the only thing I can think left to do tomorrow is to open it up and unplug and replug the HDD.

I am assuming the drive has failed but does anyone have any other thoughts? Have I missed something? perhaps a 3rd party sata driver? That was the only other thing I could think off?

    Thanks very much

    Sam

I'm going to guess that you have one of the Intel-based dv6000's since they require SATA drivers that aren't included in the WinXP install CD. It's possible to build a custom install disc that does have the drivers using nlite. I'll defer to the Intel users here to help you further if needed.

    Thanks guys,

I was able to go into repair console and get the computer running again.

Found a heap of virus's, do you guys think that smitfraud or zlob could corrupt files to do with NTFS?

    cheers

    Sam
