You may think the title says it all but this is pretty seriously messed up, I rolled back to xp a few months ago and at the time no serious problems (still cant find the drivers for the SM bus controller though).

I went to burn a dvd yesterday to find it wouldn't, figured it was a problem with the dvd disc itself, brought a second pack still no luck, it reads cd's and dvd's and will burn cd's too but wont even think about burning a dvd, it is a dvd burner and when a blank dvd disc is inserted and you try to access the drive you get an I/O device error. I've tried the my computer/manage/ata controllers trick and that didnt work any one got any ideas or experience with this problem?
    Thanks
    J
PS also dont knwo if this is anything to do with it but xp is detecting two drives in my laptop, one DVD-ram the other cd only..... cant get rid of either they automatically come back

IMO sounds like hardware issues with the drive. just to rule out driver/software issues...Have you tried restoing Vista or re-installing XP??
