My buddy brought his laptop over to me so that I could clean it up and make it run better. However (he's not so tech savvy) the scren is nearly completely dark, and only the faintest bit of XP can be seen on it. He just figured it was messed up a bit, but could be fixed. Is there anyway to fix this pile? It seems as if the backlight is broken or toggled off - though I doubt it can be turned off. Please say it can, and can just as easily be turned back on! Is there anything I can do to get this back in order?

Yeah, the symptoms seem to indicate broken backlight. These can be replaced. Search through ebay or HP's parts store or a 3r party screen repairer who might be able to find the correct backlight for the ze4800 series.
