How difficult is it to upgrade the internal sound card of Pavilion DV9700 series notebooks?

I just got the X-fi notebook and its quality is leaps ahead of the internal sound, definitly worth getting.

Thanks for the replies. How do these cards work? After you have inserted them, do they become the default sound processing component? In other words, do audio files taken from the internet pass through this card and not the factory card? Can one be assured that all audio processes are governed by the card without checking each time a given function is performed?

I have a Creative X-Fi card that I used in my Dell 1520 (in XP) and it worked very well. If you plugged in your headphones then sound was thru the X-Fi - I am reasonably sure, although not certain, that sound thru the speakers was via Dell's cheap Sigmatel solution. The Creative card is flimsy though and stuck out too much - at least out of the 1520 anyway.

I dont actually have one but im quite sure once you set it as your "Default sound device" it will act as your soundcard and all playback will come out of it

So yes once you plug it in and do a few settings it will replace the integrated sound card that came with your pavilion
