Hi,
I'm having a a VERY hard time getting my sister's DV6 to connect to our router.
I've updated the wifi driver, and the firmware on my ASUS WL-520 GU.
I can see the network, but I won't let me connect. Running WPA-Auto-Personal.
Now, I've heard that Vista has issues with WPA, but my dell connects fine without any issues.
Oh, and to complicate things a bit more. If I plug the laptop into the router with an ethernet cable, I can connect wirelessly to the router. If I then unplug from the router, the wireless with work for a couple minutes, and then kick me off.

try WEP or MAC Authentication.
-
WEP is flaky too. Will connect, then drop to LOCAL, then disconnect.

A number of users have reported similar problems with their Intel 5100 wireless N capable units. If your unit is so equipped and updating to the most current driver fails to solve your problem, try turning the N function off.
To do this, go to Device Manager. Find Network Adapters. Select & right click Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN. Select properties. This should open the WiFi menu with multiple tabs. Select the Advanced tab. In the Advanced Property section, select 802.11 N mode. In the Value pull down to the right, select Disabled. Click OK and exit. Re-BOOT and cross your fingers.
This has been reported to work for a number of users. -

Hope it works for ya. It did for our DV4t.
While the DV2700tv (Intel 4965 BGN) in the house would have 5 bars and a very stable G connection, the DV4t would show 3 or 4 bars and intermittently drop out. Some time ago someone else here at NBR recommended disabling the N function for the Intel 5100 series wireless. The workaround worked and weve had no problems since. Results for other posters however, have been mixed. Not sure why? Specific routers perhaps?
At-any-rate, its worth a try. -
Are you using it with WEP or WPA?
-
WEP 128bit and MAC filtering.
Reason: We have other devices that do not support WPA. -
Ah, given up for now.
WEP worked very sporadically. I was able to connect it, and then surf for 3-5 minutes, and then it would disconnect (kinda, it would show that the connection is still there, but couldn't browse or even ping the router).
Did some google-ing, and it looks like the issue is with the Intel 5100 card itself (users with all makes have had issues).
So hopefully intel comes out with a driver fix. As for now, I set my sister up with a USB adapter we had lying around. Good enough for now. OH, and it works with WPA! -
Its a shame youve had such a difficult time with your wireless.
If youve updated the driver, turned WEP and /or WPA on and off, have turned the N function off, and youre sure of your router settings, then the only other thing I know of that you might try is going back into device manager and turning the Roaming Agressiveness and Transmit Power up to medium high or high and setting the Wireless Mode to item 4. 802.11b/g.
If those dont help, I think Id consider sending the DV6 in for repair. Perhaps an antenna is disconnected or something, but whatever the case, your sister deserves to get what she paid for in her HP notebook.
All the best....
