I have a Pavillion N5495 laptop which has (had) an intermittent lighting for the screen. When the (florescent?) light isn't working, you can still dimly see that the liquid crystal "display" is working but it's virtually useless without the lighting.

Over time I found that unplugging and re-plugging the switchboard PCA would make the light come on. The time the screen would be useable slowly, over time, became less and less until now, re-seating does not help--it's dark, period.

Wiggling the cord never has had any effect, and the plug and recpticle which I believe is the problem are so fine, I can't "scratch" the metal contact surfaces to try and establish a better connection.

I replaced the switchboard and no change. The motherboard has the other part (female receptical) but is nearly $400 and that's too expensive for plug and try!

At one time in our office, several of these were in use and almost everyone eventually had a dark screen. HP fixed at no charge since we had purchased warrenties, but mine finally happened after mine experied.

Anyone familiar with this phenomen? Is there a less expensive fix? Is there any other way to back-light the display?

    Thanks!
